Does anyone know how old the Free Republic software is? Doesn't appear to have been updated in at least the 20 years that I've been here. It would be nice to have hyperlinks and better interfaces and a better search function. Not just text and photo files in line. It looks like Craigslist looked about 25 years ago. Anybody with software experience have any thoughts on this?
I think there was one for a while.
“What about having an italicized or box that shows what the previous comment was without having to scroll back and see what the other person wrote?”
Copy/paste works fine. Especially if you don’t need to see an entire post. You can copy a short excerpt.
With every “new software too,” come complexity and cost of maintenance. That, also includes more defense mechanisms to protect the site from scripts that are not what they appear to be.
With the present machinery, the site engineers have a lot of experience with all of the nuts and bolts.
“New tools” lead to requirement of defense against DDoS attacks, and part of that defense now includes increasing use of CDNs - Content Delivery Networks - that increase costs.
Presently, FR defense against BOTs, is FR’s business - NOT something that involves Cloudflare, hCAPTCHA, Google rCAPTCHA, and other 3rd Party expense.
Big stores rearrange everything periodically so that customers can’t just go right to the item they came to buy but have to hunt for it while walking bast all that other stuff so you will see something else you might buy.
There USED to be a view counter. I think it disappeared after an update (maybe around 2008? .. )
I still got a thousand Netscape minutes.
It’s worked fine for me the past 26 years. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
Yes 100%. I believe you are in the same industry as I and as you know our work documents are thousands of pages and have hyperlinks to cross-reference keywords even in other documents. Plus having graphic depictions of profiles Etc. You know what I mean by profiles. Plus highlighted text of recent changes Etc
It's friendly enough for me. That's why I've stayed 26 years.
Rock solid.
I hate updates when I am used to a program as it is and can do everything quickly. Yahoo email is the latest one. I have three sites. One got wiped clean and no longer receives email/ I can send but not receive. I tweaked the filters but no change. Nr.2 randomly assigns status of incoming as All, Priority and 2 others. Third site also does not receive incoming. site has a button for returning to the old system. The other two do not offer that option. I hate them.
Embrace, extend, extinguish.
if it matters, I think it’s perfect as-is
I would really like to have a “Like” button. Other than that, leave it alone.
It's a marketing game. They think you'll spend more money having to walk around the store looking for the things you buy in their old places. Screw that. I just want to get what I need and get out. I'm almost 78. The last place I want to be playing hide and seek is in a grocery store.
Free Republic is like going to Community college to get welding or auto mechaics training...we do not need to be for Harvard lawyers.
Actually everything I wanted online was fine with Netscape (7?) and MacOS9.
Or ME!
Nope...haven't noticed that at all. I go through "Latest Articles" one after the other, until I reach the last article I read the day before. That's 24 hours of postings I scan through every day. If anything changed on this site, I wouldn't use it anymore, even after all the years I've been here.
