Does anyone know how old the Free Republic software is? Doesn't appear to have been updated in at least the 20 years that I've been here. It would be nice to have hyperlinks and better interfaces and a better search function. Not just text and photo files in line. It looks like Craigslist looked about 25 years ago. Anybody with software experience have any thoughts on this?
That's where mankind should have stayed. What is going on in this world and this country today is not progress, it's destruction. And all I know is that you want to destroy what has been for a large number of people, a very comfortable place to be.
I want to know where are all the ads??
“It would take a total rewrite at a very hefty price tag.”
Actually not anymore. I like it how it is too and agree it needs to be left alone. But the truth is nowdays there are scores of prebuilt drop in turnkey website scripts for anything you want. Forums, stores, social sites just like Facebook or Twitter, Blogs, Image galleries, file sharing, Etc. And those are just the free ones that are open source. If you want a premium drop in with 3rd party support included it can be had for a couple hundred dollars. It really is easy and pretty cheap now to build and have a site hosted. Last premium hosting I had was only costing me $360 for three years...
The message is shit.
Blasphemy - you'll smoke a turd in hell for that one.
I agree. Upvoting sometimes encourages two people are arguing to keep going because they equate upvotes with agreement/support. Since a user can upvote all participants in a pointless argument, it becomes a Neilsen rating indicating how entertaining the fireworks show is and not how persuasive the arguments are.
If you ain't old already, you will be one day. You've talked down to every single person who has poo-pooed your idea. It makes me wonder what your real motive is with this thread, because it sure as hell isn't just trying to sell a change of software.
“Upvoting sometimes encourages two people are arguing to keep going because they equate upvotes with agreement/support.”
I absolutely agree myself. The tread turns into a huge useless thread with nothing but arguing about who voted for who and why. It becomes petty and stupid and derails the whole thread topic.
Maybe a compromise . . . update the “resource links” on the home page, as some of them are quite dead.
Yeah... "If it AIN'T BROKE DON'T FIX IT"
Works well for me
I remember all of the crying about, “I WANT AN EDIT FEATURE SO THAT I CAN EDIT MY POSTS!”
I always told them, “There IS an edit feature! Post a message to “Admin Moderator!” ;-)
Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign used several slogans, most prominently “Change We Can Believe In” and “Change We Need”.
Change comes from within.
Sometimes I think a big fat pencil and big chief tablet would be better than any software.
The goal here is to communicate, learn conservative principles. learn how to express those thoughts. maybe have a little fun also.
I would very much encourage ALL to read and study the ten conservative principles:
https://kirkcenter.org/conservatism/ten-conservative-principles/
That is a much better item of discussion than software. Once you have studied them, come back to us and we can talk about software in light of them.
I vote big chief tablet over new software. In many ways FR is my big chief tablet and big fat pencil.
“No back doors if you build it yourself from scratch.”
That is all based on the server and directory permissions completely aside from the script. Even if back doors are coded in you have to personally open the server gates and or directory/database permissions to allow them to even work. But with prebuilt open source scripts you can audit them to check for any security issues.
You had dial up? Sheer luxury! We used to dream of dial up. We only had the smoke signal edition of Free Republic! And only when the weather was clear and the sun was up. Posting by smoke signal was a nightmare compared to today. Whole posts would often just blow away.
