New 'razor blade throat' COVID subvariant quickly gains ground in California

A new COVID-19 variant, nicknamed Nimbus, is rising around the world — including in California — and known for giving “razor blade throat” symptoms.

Officially called NB.1.8.1, the variant was labeled a “variant under monitoring” by the World Health Organization on May 23, according to a recent report. That means it’s not currently a major threat; however, it’s spreading fast enough to raise flags. As of late April, it made up 10.7% of global COVID-19 samples, a jump from 2.5% just a month earlier.

The variant was first spotted in January and carries several genetic changes, particularly in the spike protein, the part of the virus that helps it infect human cells. Some of those changes might help it spread more easily or avoid the body’s immune response, especially in those who were previously infected or vaccinated.

“Every time you get a new strain, it always is a little bit more transmissible than what came before it,” Dr. Peter Chin-Hong, a UCSF infectious disease specialist, told SFGATE. “Just like a pop song is more catchy when it rises to the top of the charts. And this particular one, Nimbus, is not just proportionally higher right now in California, the speed at which it’s rising in the charts is also high … but it’s not more severe.”

Stanford’s Clinical Virology Laboratory confirmed one of the first cases of the variant in California on April 17 in the GISAID COVID-19 database, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Although most infections in the U.S. are still caused by a related variant called LP.8.1 — a descendant of Omicron — Nimbus is rapidly gaining ground.

…State officials said the variant is currently growing faster than other strains and is being tracked closely through genomic sequencing and wastewater surveillance.

“razor blade throat” symptoms

Written as though that is a commonly known term and offers zero explanation as to what that means. I assume a really bad sore throat?

Fauci and his buddies have apparently figured out how to get those spike proteins to slice and dice their way thru the throat.
Either that, or some people are just catching some rough colds. My throat often feels like a razor blade when I get a cold.

He is. Been clear of cancer for a year and a half. Hallelujah. Some residual effects of chemo, but it doesn’t often interfere with what he wants to do. He wasn’t able to go back to work, he can’t stand for long periods. But we are adjusting. At 75 he shouldn’t have to go back to work. But he enjoyed it.

If you have had that feeling you know what it is like. I went to urgent care and said exactly that ....swallowing razor blades.

Of course, if you actually swallowed razor blades I am sure that would be much worse but what I experienced was horrendous. Tesla pearls (Tessalon perles) did help with nasty cough

I had a strep infection many years ago that laid me low in a matter of hours.
Had a full day planned with college classes in the morning and an important military function for my husband in the PM.
During the course of an exam at 8AM got so sick I had to go home and fall on the bed face down because I could not swallow at all and nose was running a stream.
I was absolutely out of it until the kids got home from school.
Even then I couldn’t come to enough to call my husband and my throat was so swollen I couldn’t talk anyway.

I’ve had some extremely bad sore throats before...not sure if what any of them were could be described as that. Makes it so difficult to swallow - dreaded even swallowing a bit of saliva.

But I’ll take it over severe, life threatening respiratory issues and high fever the original strains of this virus were causing...assuming this strain isn’t also offering that in addition to the razor blades.

You have to give credit to Dr. Faucci Fauci, to be able to enhance and make more mortal lethal these pathogens, he did a pretty good job. I guess he made some money off of his enhancement.

I guess Fauci's sand-flea-infested beagle puppies didn't suffer in vain!

My last case of COVID happened in January 2022. It came with the "razor blade" sore throat, fatigue, malaise. The test strip went hard purple as soon as the moisture from the sample contacted the "T" line. It persisted for 10 days before I had a clear test. Aside from lowering my work productivity from my home office, it was no big deal. We (my wife brought it home from the office) just made meals at home. She received "COVID" pay and was prohibited from coming to the office (where she was infected) until clear.

Written as though that is a commonly known term and offers zero explanation as to what that means.

I would assume that it means that, when you swallow, the first blade lifts the bristle, while the second blade cuts it off.

I wonder if this is what I had recently. I was certain it was strep but the test from the doctor’s office said no. I wasn’t tested for covid though. It went away after a few days of gargling hot salt water and throat spray.
