250th Anniv. Army Parade...Yay or Nay?
6-14-25

Posted on 06/14/2025 9:23:10 AM PDT by nuconvert

I just read a poll that said 51% of Veterans are not in favor.

What are people here feeling?

I know it's expensive, but it's not like it happens every year.

There seem to be a lot of people bothered by the optics. Doesn't bother me. I hope it comes off without a major incident. I'll be watching on tv. :~)

Spent the last 45 years working (mainly) US Army aviation as a civilian, (Chinooks, Cobras, Black Hawks) - they have usually played 2nd fiddle to the Air Force (fighters and bombers - flashy) and Navy (face of US around the world) while doing mainly the under-appreciated grunt work.

Go Army!

Flag Day, too....just a coincidence? I can’t remember if Betsy Ross made the first flag in 1775, 1776, or 1777.

“I don’t think we need to see to believe we have more, or better.”

This is very much along the same sentiment expressed by Sen. John Kennedy, which surprised me, as he’s someone I generally agree with.

‘Bad look at the moment you are accused of being a dictator etc. “

This has been planned for a long time. He should bow to pressure and scrap it?

“Twenty-three and a butt in the Doughboys...”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Had to think for a minute what that meant.
Good poem and you have good reason to be very proud.
Sounds like a good time for a super duper Veterans Day Parade.
We CAN afford an Army Day”
.
Britain just celebrated VE Day—with flyovers—after 80 years.
If Britain can afford a parade, the US should also.
I guess the “Thank you for you service” platitudes ring pretty hollow if this question even needs to be asked.
We are $37 Trillion in debt. Doesn’t seem like the right time to have an expensive parade. Especially after forcing major cuts on many government agencies.
Also 179th anniversary of California Independence from Mexico. June 14, 1846.
Wisely 25 days later became part of the United States.
We should celebrate anniversaries. And, 250 years of a standing Army (or Navy), is worth celebrating.
He loved being regular army and it was hard for him to retire. In his will, he left a bequest for the bugler blowing taps.
His father joined the army twice - Spanish American War and WW I in France. Active in multiple veteran groups, he used to carry the flag in parades. That is, until ...”still in good health from all of his outdoor activity, in 1942 Jack decided to re-enlist for World War II. When the army refused the former soldier, now 78 years old, Jack became so angry that he stopped marching in the parade for Decoration Day, the holiday now known as Memorial Day.”
Jack wrote about Decoration Day:
Soldier, sailor, marine, Buddies all!
The grand old men of the Grand Army, God bless ‘em. “The Vacant Chair,” they all remember; the swamps, jungle fevers, bolos, rattling land crabs, “A Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight,” of the graying, thinning ranks of the Spanish War men; the Buddies of the Big Show, who are already answering their last assembly by companies; mothers, wives and sweethearts, the sobs and heartaches for those who have passed; the unashamed tears that will come to veterans of all wars, when the crash of the three volleys blaze from rifle muzzles and as the smoke leaves the guns, comes the mournfully, plaintive, sweet vibrant soul-reaching tones of the bugle carrying the message of remembrance - Taps, into God’s keeping until we all meet again. Where the flowers grow and rest upon the wraiths of those who lie under the living green.
Yes, Buddy, there is some one you think about on Decoration day, isn’t there? When you think of him or them, there is a tightening of your throat, that’s true. You are sad, you kind of choke up, and gaze with unseeing eyes back into awful days, and little details become vivid. You heard his last message to his loved ones, maybe. His few trinkets you turned over for shipment, knowing the soul-searing grief that would be caused by his never returning.
Soon, perhaps, there will be some of us joining this silent army. There are none of us that would care to think of “going West” without some one to mourn a bit for us, would we? Or to have three volleys and Taps and, upon Decoration day, fragrant flowers strewn over us - just a remembrance that we had done our best - soldiers, sailors, marines.
Isn’t it meet and right that we get into the old uniform, or if we haven’t one, to turn out and join the parade on Memorial day? This hour will not be missed and, as we grow older, it seems obligatory, this honor to the dead.
Nevada State Journal, May 31, 1926
Great Grandfather led an army cavalry group hunting down John Hunt Morgan and his Confederate raiders. Until his horse fell on him. Then he transferred to the Judge Advocate Corps.
The family was army as far back in American history as there was army.
Every time I read one of the FR stories of military service, I feel so grateful for those who chose to place themselves in potential danger to protect us and wore the uniform.
I’m thrilled that there will be a 250th Parade and will think of all our FR service members as I watch the young ones marching by - it’s their generation’s turn.
