The Garden Thread - June, 2025
June 1, 2025 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memoriam

Posted on 06/01/2025 5:48:14 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The MONTHLY Gardening Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time.

Ah...thanks for the explanation about the Girl’s School.

I thought it was a REALLY BIG Wedding. LOL!

I know, right? The article says that there was a pressure group demanding individual rights to wear a traditional cap and gown. I guess every girl’s school has a few lesbians. If anyone actually did wear one, she was standing in the back.

Thank God they didn’t cave to a special interest group.

I’m sick of the majority of us being bullied by overgrown, entitled, toddlers.

Qiviut; Spillover from May. Possible companion planting for basil. (And you can make nasturtium / basil pesto!)

Thanks - I made a note for next year. I don’t have the space for nasturtiums this year.

I LOVE Musicals. I can only think of one that I don’t like and that’s ‘Phantom.’ And I have no interest in seeing ‘Hamilton.’ I can sing you the entire score of ‘Oklahoma!’ if you’d like. I watch ‘1776’ every 4th of July. I think we did that play 4 times as I was growing up. ‘For God’s sake John! Sit down!’ “He plays the violin; he tucks it right under his chin...’

I also know the score to, ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ another perennial favorite. ‘But of all God’s miracles large and small, the most miraculous one of all is the one I thought could never be...God has given you to me!’

‘Carousel!’ I’ve had a Girl Crush on Shirley Jones my entire LIFE! Best. Duet. Ever. EVER!

‘If I loved you,
Time and again I would try to say
All I’d want you to know.
If I loved you,
Words wouldn’t come in an easy way
Round in circles I’d go!’

I wonder what the Rodgers and Hammerstein Estate is worth?

I grew up in a ‘Theater Family.’ Dad built sets, Mom did costuming. I was usually Stage Crew or an Usher so I got to see the plays for FREE, or chained to a sewing machine in the back hall, helping Mom with the, ‘emergency repairs.’

I was in one play - I was a Turtle, LOL! My Sister was one of the Urchins in ‘Oliver!’ and our family dog - who looked like a fox to begin with - got a haircut and makeup and Ginger was the Fox that Auntie Mame saves from the Hounds.

There was NO living with Ginger after she had her Big Break. What a DIVA, LOL!

I’ll look into the ‘Top Gun’ brand. I’m going to whip up a batch of the ‘Stay Out of My Garden’ sauce because today I had four more tomatoes pulled up by the raccoon overnight...though again, the bird feeders weren’t touched.

Easily replanted, but this is getting annoying! I’ve never had this issue before. Jerks!

I may have to start using the Liquid Bone Meal and water it in after the tomatoes start blooming, instead of putting it in the planting hole. I KNOW that’s what they’re smelling and digging for. Double Jerks! ;)

“Expert Gardener’ Miracle-Gro knockoff fertilizer. Exact same ingredients as MG, but half the price.”

I use that, too. Good stuff.

Glad your damage was minimal. We’re in for big rain on Tuesday, but I’m hoping it will tamp down the smoke.

All the guys we talked to at the various Graduation Parties today worked the morning chopping and bailing, and then had some good eats at the parties and left again to do more chopping and bailing. They REALLY live by the weather around here. No one is offended if you eat and run this time of year. ;)

“If I’ve used leaves in the past for mulch, I don’t remember it because my memory ain’t all that.”

Write yourself a note, LOL! Check that layer of matted leaves. If they’re not breaking down, they’re NOT doing you any favors. Matted leaves, much like lawn clippings, tend to ‘clump’ and then water and fertilizers can’t get down to the roots of your tomato plants.

Don’t panic! Just pull back the straw and check it out to see if the leaves are composting/breaking down some.

If not, your solution would be to water/fertilize your tomato plants right at the BASE of the plant so they at least get a little something from above. No overhead watering for tomatoes. They HATE that. Wet leaves = disease.

This has been a Public Service Announcement. :)

Your ‘Garden Helpers’ always crack me up!

Yes, that ash has got to be a good dose of Phosphorus if you’re getting all that bloom.

Kind of a ‘Mixed Blessing’ from all of the destruction.

“How do you get more color in red onions?”

Are you talking about the package of onion ‘bulbs’ that are usually red, white and yellow, mixed? Or did you buy the long, slender onions that are a small bulb on one end and greens on the other?

You can’t really ADD more ‘red’ to onions, so if you want deeper red onion, you’ll need to buy a different variety. I’m pretty positive that soil PH and fertilizing won’t change their habits.

I need a little more info, Please. :)

Oh, that is all just so beautiful!

I hope those girls appreciate all the BLESSINGS and the, ‘Step Up In Life’ they have been given just by being BORN into that life. :)

We went to two Graduations parties, today. One was in a BAR - because the Graduate WORKS there now and for the Summer before College starts - the FOOD WAS BEYOND AMAZING!

And the other was in a BARN at the next farm over from us - and those twin boys (and their parents!) are 100% AMAZING!

Not ALL kids suck these days. There IS some hope for the future! ;)

It was a little package of small onion bulbs, bought at Lowe’s, but all red, not mixed. I don’t remember if there was a variety name listed, could be a different variety from what we’ve tried in the past. Those ones usually ended up with lots of red color, but they never really formed decent bulbs no matter how long we left them in the dirt.

We live in southern Arizona, west of Tucson, Zone 9, I think. We planted these onions around mid-March, and the weather hasn’t been all that hot yet except for a couple of days around 105.

I had a problem with something digging up an entire onion bed once because I spread blood meal there when I planted them.

What I did in that case, since it was onions, was lay some flattened out chicken wire down and let the onions grow up through that for a while. Then it can easily be lifted off, not something that can be done with older regular plants.

This year what I did was put it in early before I planted because it takes time to work anyways from what I hear. Since there was no evidence of digging, I planted the onions a couple weeks later.

I was concerned about some liquid fish fertilizer (nasty smelling stuff) I used on the starts, but didn’t have any trouble with that either.

Counting my blessings.....

Thanks for the reminder about the tomatoes.

The problem is.... rain.

I love columbine!

And they can take a lot of water!

Summer of 2023 goes down as second rainiest on record in Boston, forecasters say - The Boston Globe More than 20 inches of rain fell in Boston over the past three months, the second-highest total on record, the National Weather Service said Thursday. Only 1955, when two hurricanes passed by the region a week apart in August, saw more rainfall, with nearly 25 inches. The weather service’s rainfall records date back to 1872. ...Last year, less than 4.5 inches of rain fell, creating “critical drought” conditions across much of Massachusetts. It was the driest summer in Boston in 138 years.
