Spain clamps down on Airbnb as tourism backlash returns for summer

The Spanish government has called for the removal of the listings of nearly 66,000 properties on rental platform Airbnb on the grounds that they breach regulations for tourist accommodation. The clampdown comes as protests against over-tourism have begun ahead of the summer season. Demonstrations in the Canary Islands on Sunday attracted thousands of people. The minister for social rights, consumer affairs and the 2030 Agenda, Pablo Bustinduy, said the rental properties in question had "violated various norms regarding housing for tourist use". The announcement followed a Madrid court ruling that Airbnb must immediately withdraw from the market 5,800 of the properties cited by the ministry.

A young guy at work just got back from Spain after a two week trip with his Girlfriend. He said, I want to move to Spain right now. Its perfect. I was depressed coming back to the USA.

I was a tad pissy after that. It amazes me people think Europe is a utopia. he wants to move fine but the USA is the best country on earth IMO.

They could just raise prices to curtail the numbers, but no. When the people make money renting their spaces, the owners of capital (hotels) squeal and drag out their shills to do it.

I'd much rather stay in somebody's home than pay for a cubicle. It's simply much more interesting to have a cultural view into another family. We stayed in pensions for our honeymoon and those experiences (particularly in Holland) enriched our lives ever since. Some were simply living courageously with grace, warmth, and dignity.

People mistake a beautiful tourist destination for a place you could actually live. What your coworker would find is there’s no job for him there. One of the defining characteristics of a great tourist destination is usually the lack of industrial development. And the wonderful service is because that’s the only employment the locals can get.

This is leaving aside the issues he’d have trying to be a resident alien.

It is pretty nice in Spain. They have better weather than the Northern European countries. Public transport is excellent. It’s cheaper. And they haven’t had as much mooselimb immigration as German, France, etc al.

For a young person, it must look really appealing. But yes, the USA is still the best, by far for me. Even though, libs are trying like hell to ruin it

Something similar happened here in Boise a few years ago where the do-nothing liberal mayor started talking about more regulations on Airbnbs.
It didn’t happen, but he got un-elected as a result and now we’re stuck with someone even worse (Lauren McLean, the commie from Boston).

It’s popular with Digital Nomads who can do their job from anywhere in the world.

A lot of AirBnbs are owned by large companies who literally have thousands of units around the world.

“Air BBs” are nothing more than mini hotels in otherwise stable, secure, family oriented neighborhoods. A commercial use with an ever-changing and un-accountable occupancy. Yet another nail in the coffin of our society’s foundational unit: the Traditional Family. Most people in liberal areas are just fine with that.

He was there for two weeks, he didn’t learn shit about Spain or how welcome he would be as an American in the long term.

It’s turning all the major cities in Europe into mini Disneylands.

All of the local culture is being destroyed, and every city now looks and feels the same.

He said, I want to move to Spain right now. Its perfect.
until the girlfriend wears off ...

It may seem fine if he lives as an ex-patriot on an American salary, unless and until the EU sinks its claws into his income stream. On a Spanish salary, after taxes, he may earn 40% of what he takes home in America.

Buying a car and paying for gasoline is considerably more expensive.

It’s the weather. They have a lovely climate and that along with the charm of the superficial lifestyle and culture, scenery, and antiquity is very attractive to tourists. Long term he would hate it because it’s a socialist country.
