The Garden Thread - May, 2025
May 1, 2025 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memoriam

Posted on 05/01/2025 6:15:12 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The MONTHLY Gardening Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time.

AWESOME Report from the Field! Look at all those Boy Toys! ;)

I love how your PRIDE for your #1 Marine Daughter is always front and center. *HEART*

I miss my Dad SO MUCH! He always called me his, ‘Five-Foot Nothing Tank Commando’ when introducing me to others during my Army days. He was Navy, but he didn’t begrudge me being a Ground Pounder. ;) (I fear and loathe open water!)

Love the Clematis! Pretty sure that’s, ‘Candy Stripe.’ She’s a beauty! Well done, Mrs. Augie! :)

Mandolin sliced them taters super-thin! Still have all my knuckles, too! ;) I layered Red Norland potatoes in a buttered casserole. Baked 400 30 min, and at lower temp; took off lid to brown top.

Your version of the potatoes is a-ok. Glad your knuckles survived.

We are west of Indianapolis, so I wouldn’t know about south of Indy, though I’d imagine they have about the same as we do here.

I’ve watched a black rat snake (constrictor) make a nice meal from a chipmunk first hand here a summer or two ago. Very impressive jaw movement. I don’t think I need to get more graphic than that.

Did I mention how much I hate snakes? No matter if they’re not poisonous. I don’t care. I HATE SNAKES!

I think it’s an Adam and Eve thing. That serpent isn’t gonna trick me!

*** I taste-tested. ;) ***

I am a taste-tester cook. I do use a new fork/spoon for those who get grossed out by this method, like my kids do. This is how you get a recipe exactly right.

I tend to undersalt a little bit, as some people like more and some prefer less. If you’re a heavy salter, you’ll need to add it at the table. I have two friends that I consider over-salters by anyone’s standards. They both add salt to tortilla chips at restaurants and popcorn at movies. So I add to my taste, which isn’t terribly sensitive, and let others add at their plate. I think that’s fair.

If you like no salt, you need to tell me before I start cooking.

*** I fear and loathe open water!***

Uncanny. I fear and loathe the open water, too.

I love the beach, and swimming, but I was in a precarious situation in the Gulf of America when I was a teenager. We couldn’t see land where we were fishing. I was with my older brother and younger sister.

After a morning of fishing, we saw a storm was rolling in. We tried to get the motors started to head back to shore. We lost both of the engines on the boat. The storm came. It was a little rocky. Ok, it was a lot rocky. It was a storm and all we had was two oars and a rope. Eventually we waved down another boat, which towed us in to shore. I’m not sure how many miles but I think we were about 8-10 from land. I don’t even remember how many hours that all was. It felt like forever. It got cold if you were wearing what I was. (Just a bathing suit and a t-shirt and shorts.)

I was an excellent swimmer through my youth and early adulthood, but nothing could prepare me for that event.

I haven’t been on a boat in the ocean or gulf since then. Zero desire. Intercoastal waterways, yes. Open water, no. Don’t try to get me on a fancy ocean cruise. It’s never gonna happen. Maybe a river cruise if I can see the shore. If I can see the shore, I think in my head maybe I’m still strong enough that I could make it there. LOL.

Unless I’ve been drugged, I’m never going to willingly go on the open water again.

I know someone who will want that Lemon Tiramisu!
(Now I have to go find some ladyfingers!) Thanks Liz!

Lemon fanatics love it.

Triple lemon flavor....but if it’s still not enough, you can
dip the ladyfingers in limoncello for yet another lemon hit.

Supper tonight is deli Roasted Chicken, Stacked Potatoes,
garden Asparagus, and glasses of cold, cold milk.

chilled Sancerre made with Sauvignon Blanc grapes.

I always use just a pinch of salt in anything and let my guest add salt as they desire.

I used make homemade soup more on the salty-side, but since Mom With Hope turned me on to 'Vegeta' seasoning, that takes care of the soup issue for me. LOVE the stuff.

Never knew I was, as I always went sailing with my Dad. Nothing fancy, just a 40’ sailboat on the Madison lakes. You can see the shoreline from any of those, so it never bothered me.

BUT - we rented a charter boat and sailed across Lake Michigan. And that was all she wrote, LOL! I was miserable the entire time and was as nervous as the black female cat that ‘Pepe Le Pew’ is always trying to catch!

We had a motor, HUGE sails, decent sleeping accommodations. a Crew and a REAL Captain on board. No chance of Pirates on Lake Michigan, LOL!

My friends LOVE to go on ocean cruises. Ugh! As you said, they’d need to drug me to even get me on the boat, LOL! A River Cruise or the Alaskan Inside Passage would probably be do-able.

Bon; I do not know if you will use thig, but interesting information! Propagating Roses from cuttings. (Never from any trademarked variety of course! I suppose this is good info for anyone who needs to start 100 roses for their Rose Bower!

Video short on rooting rose cuttings

2nd video short on rooting rose cuttings

Very unromantic video short on Greenhouse Factory Rose Flower Production.

I do note the extensive use of gloves!

Incredible Clematis, electric pink!

Its starting to dry out. Hope your rhubarb takes off. (First picture above the Grey Tractor (I.H. or Ford?) Is that your neighbors pond in the back ground or yours? How are your perch?)

Actually Oswego is not even as bad as Tug Hill just south of Watertown, or the South Towns of Western NY.

The Boston/Holland area is the worst. But great skiing.

I grew up in the Buffalo area but my dad, who grew up in South Buffalo, refused to live there because of the snow so he moved north of the city. Which still gets some on occasion, but nothing like South Buffalo and south of that.

Bon; (#1) Youtube short on starting an avocado tree. Have not tried it, but seems a lot more hands off and easier than the standard 3 toothpicks and glass of water for 2 months on your counter idea. He is apparently getting fruit off his short tree. Something for folks in the southern tier or who have room to grow indoors. I have no information on the variety of avocado to use...Hass??

Youtube short easy way to grow avocado from seed.

Number one...would it grow in your coral sand? They need a lot of water I understand.

I’ve propagated rosemary from cuttings. I buy the bushiest plant in the garden center and end up with 8-10 more.

I’m also trying lemon thyme this year.

Rosemary is too hard to germinate and thyme I’ve had little success with. The seeds are microscopic. How the stuff propagates and spreads in the wild is beyond me. I guess when you produce that many seeds, something is bound to make it.
