The 23-year-old, who quarterbacked under his father at University of Colorado, had been expected to be drafted during the first round. Sanders was also surprisingly passed over by teams for the second and third rounds. Finally, on Saturday, he was selected by the Cleveland Browns during the fifth round as the No. 144 pick.

My take is why did they draft him after they had drafted Gabriel a 5’11” QB in the third round?
Pre-draft rumors had tied the Browns to Sanders.
I think THEIR first preference was always to draft Sanders as their 1st QB taken.
Sanders was blackballed.
Maybe it was intentional or just groupthink.
With the NFL you never know.
It is an evil and nefarious organization.
The leaking of the Gruden emails was absolutely evil reminiscent of the Deep State in politics.
It’s hard for me to root for Sanders, but I don’t care who it is I would like people treated half way decently and fairly.
There have been a lot of schmucks drafted as 1st round QB’s in recent years and maybe it was fair for him to drop to the second round, but from past history he should have dropped no further.
Sanders is not a thug like a great many who got drafted.
He needs to season a little before he plays much.
A few seasoned defensive linemen will adjust his attitude rather swiftly.
It seems he’s consumed whole his father’s unparalleled (in team sports) sense of bravado.
News flash: There’s only ever going to be one Deion Sanders.
So that’s bad enough.
But also, and perhaps most damaging to his NFL career prospects, he appears to have been reading (and uncritically believing) his own press clippings.
Heck—he’s probably been writing them.
If he was blackballed why did they draft him? What changed between late Friday and today? Someone had to remove the blackball.
well, I guess you can dress any way you want in your ROLLS ROYCE
Sure. But it was the Browns. So nobody really cared. When a fairly competent franchise give a player a lot of money it resets the contract ladder. But the Browns do it, other teams tell players they want that kind of money “well you should play for a stupid team, like the Browns”. Nobody got made at them. Honestly they were probably more upset about the money to Rodgers, who was already showing signs of being washed up, and Green Bay is normally a competent organization.
This x 100.
Wanna hear a sad related story?
When the sanders circus was approaching media frenzy in late 2023...
A few minutes down the road at Colorado School of Mines (Division two) they were playing for a real ncaa national football championship.
Did the media give them any love? Hell no.
Comment 6 on this thread refers to a Stephen A Smith quote.
It was becoming SO OBVIOUS it had to be collusion.
Goodell must have given the okay.
Remember his daddy was a United States Senator, and the most scurrilous folk on Earth find their way into the snake pit which is the United States Senate.
Nobody was blackballed. Finding out Gruden was a POS wasn’t evil. None of it was Deep State. Gosh the silly is really high on these threads. Get over yourself.
There's a report out of New York saying Sanders showed up completely unprepared for a meeting with NYG's head coach Brian Daboll -- having obviously not reviewed a package of material sent to him in advance. And then Sanders compounded his bad first impression by getting resentful when Daboll called him out on it.
Multiply this scene by 32 teams (or whatever number of teams took the time to meet with him before the draft), and you get a picture of what kind of an insufferable @sshole you're dealing with here.
Stephen A is an idiot. It was NOT a bad look for the league. It is NOT collusion. Goodell works for the owners, not the other way around.
I wouldn't know, maybe CU's OL is almost as bad as Oklahoma's, but still...
Gotta make the reads and gotta get rid of the ball quickly, and if the OL isn't giving enough protection, gotta be mobile and able to make something out of nothing.
Plus being an entitled arrogant ass couldn't have helped him any.
Sorry.
I must be racist because I don’t care who gets drafted by the NFL. I must also be racist because I can’t pronounce his name just by reading it.
Even Jerry Jones wasn’t stupid enough to draft him.
You called it...Browns
Who, in their right mind, would want to deal with Daddy Sanders? If I was the GM in Cleveland, that offer would have come with paper work specifically banning Daddy Sanders from the team and all facilities. The son would be on a very tight regimen.
Picked before Tom Brady’s slot.
The kid “might” have a chance yet.
The man's job, like everyone in the NFL, is to sell viewers to advertisers. Period. The more attention he attracts, the more he sells. If his agent tells him to date a pop singer, he'll do that too.
