US egg prices increase to record high, dashing hopes of cheap eggs by Easter
Associated Press ^ | Updated 4:54 PM EDT, April 10, 2025 | JOSH FUNK and DEE-ANN DURBIN

U.S. egg prices increased again last month to reach a new record-high of $6.23 per dozen despite President Donald Trump’s predictions, a drop in wholesale prices and no egg farms having bird flu outbreaks....

....The farms that had fall outbreaks have been working to resume egg production after sanitizing their barns and raising new flocks, but chickens must be about six months old before they start laying eggs. Thompson said those farms did not come back online as quickly as anticipated.

The increase reported Thursday in the Consumer Price Index means consumers and businesses that rely on eggs might not get much immediate relief. Demand for eggs is typically elevated until after Easter, which falls on April 20....

....The Agriculture Department tried to find egg imports to add to the supply and nearly 4 million dozens of eggs were brought into the country in February. But egg traders saw an opportunity with the high prices and 7.6 million dozens were exported. Numbers for March were not yet available.

Earlier this week, Cal-Maine acknowledged it is being investigated by the antitrust division of the U.S. Department of Justice, which is looking into egg price increases. Cal-Maine said it is cooperating with the investigation.

Industry experts were expecting the index to reflect a drop in retail egg prices because wholesale egg prices fell significantly in March. University of Arkansas agricultural economist Jada Thompson said the wholesale prices did not start dropping until mid-March, so there may not have been enough time for the average price for the month to decline. And grocery stores may not have immediately passed on the lower prices.

$4.79 dozen here in Michigan today, even with our new cage-free requirements boosting price further here.
I DID notice that hard cooked eggs are $5.50 a dozen; no apparent bump with all the other raw increases. Handy if you want to pickle some and are terrible, like me, at hard boiling and then peeling them without making a cratered wreck of the surfaces.

Right on AP’s average # for WM’s cheapest “Lg” near FR HQ:

(But that is down from $9.00+ earlier at WM).

Still seeing between 40 and 42 cents per egg at Walmart here in NoVa. 20% down from the all time highs but I would love to see the 60 egg box drop below $10. May never see $5.74 for it again but one can dream.

prices for food across the board are tumbling...at least on amazon fresh..they’re tumbling to SANE prices because they were insanely high..but they are falling

And once again, if there is something that can be spun negatively against President Trump, or malign him for something you are right there to post it!

That’s not what I noticed at my store but I suppose some store some where the eggs might be that expensive.

Even though the AP story about eggs is false, it will be reported by hundreds of news outlets across the nation, without a single pushback. Pure propaganda designed to move public opinion against Trump policies.

“Eggs represent approximately 0.1% of the total Consumer Price Index (CPI)12. Despite a drop in wholesale prices and no egg farms having bird flu outbreaks, U.S. egg prices increased to a new record-high of $6.23 per dozen3. In the latest CPI report, egg prices were up 53% year-over-year45.”

Wholesale price of eggs is down about 50 percent to around $3 per dozen. It takes a while to clear out the inventory that stores bought at $6.

USA today has a balanced report. AP is pure BS.
“But that price and the consumer price index cost of eggs overall, which was up 5.9% in March, may not accurately reflect the drop in wholesale prices that started in the middle of the month. The CPI is an average of data collected through the month and retail prices were higher at the beginning of March, one expert said.

“Additionally, retailers may not have dropped prices of eggs proportionately with the drop in the wholesale egg market, which may have to do with retailers wanting to take advantage of recent worries about scarcity to keep prices high and upcoming demand for Easter, some experts say.”

This is why the AP is not allowed in WH press conferences anymore.

Incredibly misleading story with an outright lie for a headline. The prices are from the start of March. Prices are down 70% since then, and it ain’t even Easter.

4.99 a dozen here down from 8.99 a month ago.

And now all the local hens are laying so the farm fresh eggs are available.
