They publicly distance themselves from it and stated on DVD commentary that they refuse to watch it.
The ZAZ team initially agreed to a sequel but later withdrew, opting to work on "Police Squad!" instead.
Naked Gun came out 6 or 8 years after Airplane. Nelson was notably funny by then. But I get what you are saying.
If someone as talented as Steve Martin couldn't pull it off, no one could. Casting other actors into truly iconic characters associated with another actor should not be done.
“Great analogy. Some characters are so well defined by a specific actor, trying to remake them is just a set up for failure.”
And yet, Chris Pine and William Shatner.
Pine was excellent as Captain Kirk
Yea I was referring to Airplane, but he played the same character in every movie he made after that...
That trailer is hilarious. Maybe the movie wont be up to the originals but Im going to see that.
Yup. It did not work...
Leslie Nielsen had a very serious role as a Starship Captain in ‘Forbidden Planet’. It is this serious past which helps make his comedy so funny. Liam should do fine I figure.
Nelson always wanted to do comedy, but the powers that be in Hollywood always cast him in serious roles, usually a bad guy.
He finally got his big break in “Airplane!” And the rest as they say is history!......
You just can’t replace Leslie Neilsen as Frank Drebin no more than replacing Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau
from what I have seen in that trailer, if its an adult movie fine... But I would still consider it a catalyst for gay acceptance similar to what Klinger did in M.A.S.H. or Ferrel in Elf...
If its shown to kids(preteen) then I’d throw you in jail...
I dont find things like that funny. Eddie Murphy or Rodney Dangerfield et.al. didnt have to expose themselves for humor.
Seriously, I give it 2 thumbs down...
Now just wait one hell of a minute.
Frank Drebin is played by a white male?
NO. It needs to be played by an androgenous unicorn with ADD problems.
That one was pretty good...
I think it’s because Pine actually resembles a young William Shatner.
(Leslie Nielsen had a very serious role as a Starship Captain in ‘Forbidden Planet’.)
He was also the captain of the SS Poseidon in “The Poseidon Adventure”.

I give him a pass. He’s in mourning. His wife died a horrific death after a very long marriage and it was extremely sudden. You don’t get out of that horror.
A little, yes.
Maybe Liam Neeson has unplumbed depths as well.
I kind of doubt it but would not be the first time I was wrong. Would not even be the first time today.
Seth MacFarlane could pull this off. I’m not a fan of the ‘gross out’ humor (American Dad, Family Guy, etc.), but “The Orville” is fantastic.
