Craving These Foods Could Be Sign Of Early Onset Dementia

The leading dementia charity in the United Kingdom says certain food cravings could be a sign of a type of early-onset dementia.

Once known as “Pick’s disease,” this type of frontotemporal dementia (FTD) can be preceded by cravings for “sweet, fatty foods or carbohydrates,” according to Alzheimer’s UK.

The condition, typically diagnosed in people under the age of 65, tends to produce symptoms that get progressively worse over time. Individuals with the condition have trouble making decisions and often exhibit repetitive behaviors, like repeatedly uttering a particular phrase.

Earlier this year, The Dallas Express reported that the risk of developing dementia in late adulthood is far higher than previously believed. A recent study concluded that Americans possess a 42% risk of developing the condition after age 55, more than double the rate determined in previous studies.

Most individuals with FTD are not aware of their symptoms. Instead, a close family member or friend will usually be the first to notice something is wrong.

The condition leads nerve cells within the brain’s frontal lobes to gradually become more damaged. This can drive the sufferer to develop antisocial behavior, leading to potentially insensitive remarks about another person’s appearance, for example.

FTD can also lead people to lose empathy, unable to understand what others are thinking or feeling. Language issues, too, can plague people with the condition, harming their vocabulary. It can even make individuals forget the use of common objects, like the purpose of a microwave, for instance.

With Alzheimer’s, says the organization, early symptoms are typically the deterioration of short-term memory. With FTD, however, many sufferers do not experience immediate memory problems.

“The first noticeable symptoms for a person with FTD will be changes to their personality and behavior or difficulties with language. Sometimes, it can involve both. This is very different from the early symptoms of more common types of dementia,” said the U.K.’s Alzheimer’s Society.

Ha. Sometimes.

I often have bad insomnia and listen along with Christian shows off and on.

If I fall asleep and wake up two hours later then it was of help.

You might find this interesting, or not :)

I had a brain injury about 20 years ago.

In the early weeks I would jump out of bed in the middle of the night and shove as many sugar treats as I could down my throat like an addict until I was sated.

Sounds like a typical night for me? :)

Nah, I was never a big sweet binger.

But I as out of control on those nights..then it got better.

The issues are 90ish percent resolved.

But I do wonder if I will get a neurlological disease earlier in life because of the injury.

I’ll be 57 in a month.

Was a sturdy lad of 32 when I joined FR :(

I think the operative word is “craving”...I assume it means an unrelenting, and overehelmong desire to eat those food temptations. By then , it is obvious the subject has a problem
They should define what “insensitive” means. I would surmise that everyone who hates Trump with a passion already has FTD...we know it as TDS. Explains their craven hatred.

My youth and early adulthood were associated with frequent head injuries mostly from foolish and reckless pastimes. I did eat a lot of sweets and fatty foods during that time period. I was so active that they didn't cause weight gain. Can I now blame my bad nutrition on all of the head injuries?

I must have started Early Onset Dementia when I was 5 years old. I’ll be 78 this year.

Oh, yes! Milk Duds was always one of my favorites too.
Small, tidy and easy to eat during school classes, (or church) while barely moving your mouth. Just let them melt.

I have metastatic prostate cancer and take 5 mg of Ambien most nights. Takes about three hours to kick in, so I’ve started taking it at around 9:00 pm, so when we go to bed at midnight; it only takes another 15 minutes to be sound asleep.

I take Adderall at around 9:00 a.m. for cancer related fatigue.

>> cravings for “sweet, fatty foods or carbohydrates

Well that’s certainly helpful, because it narrows it right down...

If it tastes good and you enjoy eating it, LOOK OUT! You’re demented!

So, basically anything but protein drinks?

No joke: Malarky!

Other than sweet tarts, jelly beans, chewing gum and other candies that are made almost entirely out of sugar, the vast majority of candy and pastries have both sugar and fat.

So, let me get this straight: Other than those candies and pastries made entirely of sugar, most candies and pastries are not made entirely of sugar?

Nice tautology!
