The MONTHLY Gardening Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time.

I had this Cucumber Lemonade at ‘The Cheesecake Factory’ today and it. was. amazing! Just wanted to share. Totally blew my taste buds away! And the ‘muddle’ of mint leaves in the bottom of the glass was the perfect touch. They rimmed the tall glass with sugar, but I sipped it through a straw.

I Spent a nice afternoon in the shop watching it snow...again. I did get petunias pricked out and transplanted into 288 cells. I had a very nice jazz station on (Just Jazz in Dusseldorf, Germany). Very relaxing. I get to it from the Radio-Garden website.
I swear by Provider. It is a great green bean for cool soils and short seasons.
I can’t wait to start making ‘Sun Tea’ again for the season. So easy and so delish. :)
Radio Garden is AWESOME!

For some reason it always drops me off in Rio de Janeiro. I love it! *HEART*
I have been obsessed with ‘Brasil ‘66’ since I was a kid. My Mom was one for putting on the random record album and dancing all day while she did her chores and ran after us kids. ;)

Agreed. ‘Provider’ is a great bean, too!
I make a half gallon about every 4 days all year round. We have super clean water but it has no flavor.
I am employed.
It’s a place that around these parts, is considered the dream job for a blue collar guy. CNC Machinist. Closest place to home, good pay and laid back as far as companies go these days.
Heh, as opposed to us, who, when we’ve not had heavy rains for a while, have very good tasting water, but, with particulates that have to be filtered out (mostly looks like tiny plant fibers), and, after a heavy rain, all bets are off for a few days. (Shallow well - the water literally gets muddy / slightly brownish in appearance after heavy rains.) We go through filters way too fast - $$.
Cool!
Our Menards finally got in a limited supply of 6-packs of tomato plants. The “generic” packs are $2.99 / pack. Variety selection was pretty good though, for a typical big box garden center and not a lot of plants: I picked up a pack of Mortgage Lifters (they are well “ahead” of mine started from seed), a pack of Lemon Boys (have never tried them before), and a pack of Better Boys. The latter 2 have multiple sections of multiple plants, so I’ll have to do some dividing - I usually have pretty good success with that. Outside of tomatoes there were a few six packs of peppers -mostly “hot” varieties of which I have plenty (Thai), some cabbage, and some various herbs, and that was about it. Lots of display space was still unoccupied.
I also “broke down” and nabbed one 4” pot of “Bonnie” orange bell (sweet) peppers that had a “2-fer” (2 plants in a pot), about 3/4” apart. Variety and supply of the 4” pots looked pretty good, but I think they were all $4.98 - too high for me! I messed up though and forgot to look for Japanese eggplants for my wife - I’d have bought a “2-fer” if they had any.
Luckily* for Menards, we got pretty close but didn’t “frost” last night. I’d covered a few plants I left outside, but, our Menards this time had a lot still out “unroofed”.
*”Luckily” I think — they are 20 minutes ESE of us and it was supposed to be cooler to the east. Usually WE would be ~2 degrees cooler.
My trial separating of the lettuce starts I mentioned previously went well: 2 plants are doing great, and one that looked a little dubious a day later is coming around. I’ll try separating the rest today if I can get to them. In all these cases of separating starter plants, it’s a bit tedious to not damage the roots too badly...
It looks like we have a couple weeks of pretty good weather coming up, so long as we don’t get destructive storms. In the case of the garden, hail is the big risk. We are drying out a bit, finally, but several roads in the area are closed due to high water - I had to detour last night coming home, because of that.
Haha - that and 189 other links if I ever got time!
I found a more general article - it’s most interesting, for those of us just starting out with trying to improve germination / early growth...

I’m so HAPPY for you! I was going to come looking for you today - thought maybe you got flooded out or something. Glad you’re still with us! :)
“In all these cases of separating starter plants, it’s a bit tedious to not damage the roots too badly...”
If the root ball is sopping wet, it makes it easier to separate the individual plants, but a very sharp knife on a dry root ball works well, too. ;)
Congrats on the new job!
Our well is very deep 160 feet I think. We do have a salt softener system on it and a particulate filter before it goes there that gets changed once a month. For drinking we have two Amway under the counter water filter units. Filters last about two years and it lets you know when to change it. They are just filtering out the sodium from the treated water. Works great for us.
Aha I was heavily into Sergio also, and I sang while I danced.
Woke up this morning to snow on the ground. It started sometime before 3 AM and is still falling lightly.
Hell, I might as well still be living in Wisconsin!
