As Greenlanders prepare to head to the polls this week, the United States — and particularly President Trump’s stated interest in acquiring the territory — is looming large over their vote.
Greenland’s national election Tuesday is set to determine 31 members of the Inatsisartut, its parliament. The world’s largest island is a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, and while independence won’t be on the ballot this week, the results could ultimately set the stage for a later referendum on its future control.
Despite pushback from both Danish and European authorities, Trump has doubled down in his quest for the U.S. to take over the natural resources-rich Arctic land.
“We need Greenland for national security and even international security, and we’re working with everybody involved to try and get it.” Trump said during his speech to a joint session of Congress last week. “But we need it really for international world security, and I think we’re going to get it.”
“One way or the other, we’re going to get it,” he added.
The president’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., traveled to Nuuk, Greenland, in January to promote the annexation idea, and the president has posted supportive messages on social media to “MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!”

This should be interesting.
Alaska becomes #2. Sorry Texas.
Watch out where the huskies go,
Don’t you eat that yellow snow.
What fits inside....
Be careful, they’ll be calling you a radical...
(boy do I hate that song though)
"Alaska becomes #2. Sorry Texas."
Make Greenland Green Again!
Is this a “bumping chubbies “ contest? 😀
Nanook, no no...
Greenland is underneath so much glacial ice that much of it would literally be under water if it melted. Alaska? Not so much.
That comment made me think of a friend of mine that worked a particularly dirty job. He and his fellow workers would shower before leaving the job site. One day as he exited the shower a fellow worker checked out the size of my friend’s junk and asked who he was gonna please with that? He said “me”. 😛
COULD BE the price that’s paid for us staying in NATO.
“One way or the other, we’re going to get it,”
…I love when Trump says this. Because it happens
“Alaska becomes #2. Sorry Texas.”
Not enough people to be a state. Make it a borough of Alaska. Yeah, I know it’s far away and not contiguous, but it’s been done before. Maine was part of Massachusetts for a time.
That’s lame. Why the hell should you tell them what to call themselves. They ain’t begging to be with us they’re voting to join us. Greenland, USA. It has a nice ring. Hey neighbor mow your ice. Don’t try to change them. Thank them and welcome them aboard. Actually if they vote to join in the fun, I kinda feel sorry for them. Seems like they oughta be able to do better. IMO
Yep.
Broadly, in return for defense bases and access to Greenland's mineral wealth, the US would provide some cash, better telecommunications and air service, education, access to medical care, and a right of travel to the US, with an agreement to respect and protect Greenland's autonomy and self-government in domestic matters. The rights the US would gain could even be shared with Denmark.
Moreover, contrary to what the news media and the Left claim, America and Americans are generally popular around the world. Pacific islanders have found education in the US and service in the US military to their liking and benefit. Greenlanders would almost certainly feel the same.
TWO states bigger than Texas!
“Greenland is underneath so much glacial ice that much of it would literally be under water if it melted. Alaska? Not so much.”
Fortunately, for Greenland, it isn’t going to melt.
