I do and then I can the extra as stewed tomatoes or tomato sauce. And we did tomato juice when I was a kid.

Canning tomatoes is easy and the benefits are they taste better and you know what’s in them, IOW, just tomatoes. No dirt, no herbicides, no pesticides, no bugs, and no rat hairs.

I “hate” [by that I mean I kind of totally feel schadenfreude] to mention that for many many MAGA voters, we’ve already got the means to grow our own actually tasty tomatoes. Honestly, if you’re willing to invest in $50-$100 for a DIY hydroponics system, you can grow a lot of your vegetables in home very easily in about 5 square feet of space. A smart person will use an extra bedroom to grow tomatoes, just like people with backyard chickens will happily sell eggs. Distributed production and local distribution might be the wave of the future.

“But done artificially it’s said to result in bland tasting food.”

I know a trucker who transports food over long distances. He has described the process of gassing the unripe food while it is in transit.

“…ripened with ethylene gas…”

.

That is why supermarket tomatoes are orange, not red.
(And also why they are awful.)

What I’ve heard that they do is load the tractor trailers in Florida with crates
of green unripened tomatoes, close the trailer doors, and pump the
trailer full of ethylene gas. On I-95 from Florida the green tomatoes
’magically’ turn orange in transit, which is supposed the simulate ripeness, I guess.

Which is why almost every summer I grow my own tomatoes.
I have pretty much standardized on the Early Girl and Roma Plum varieties of tomatoes.
Usually I will grow a few of plants one or two other types that I have not yet
grown as an experiment.

I do this in order to determine which varieties do well in 5 gallon pots,
because I am standardized on doing ‘container’ gardening as well.
So I am always trying to figure out which types will do well in pots.
The big varieties (Big Beef, Better Boy, etc.) are to big for 5 gallon pots.
The root systems tend to be constrained and the plants don’t produce
as well as they would if planted in the ground. So you are thinking:
“Why not just put the in the ground?”
The ability to move them into or out of the sun - and the ability the move
them out of reach of the evil chipmunks which can, and do, decimate your crop.
Unless you construct and emplace the “Chipmunk Traps of Death”,
which we can discuss at a later time…

Good Luck on your 2025 crop!

THAT is because they are picked GREEN & Put into a warehouse & a gas is used to force them to turn RED.

THEY ARE NEVER ACTUALLY “RIPE”

Trump didn’t even tariff Mexico or Canada, they have both been put on hold, the only tariff that is on right now is China and that is on aluminum and steel NOT food

Take some of those illegals working in your hotels and have them go tends some local greenhouses and farms. Grow the stuff locally and save the transportation costs. Illegals getting paid 2 or 3 dollars an hour won’t care where they work.

Tomatoes should be renamed crapmatos. They are no longer tomatoes in my book. They are disgusting and I have no desire to eat them. But oh how I long for the days when Tomatoes were so good. juicy, sweet, and tangy. But for now I pick them off everything and throw them away. Very rarely have I even found the home grown ones to be great anymore. Even the seeds have been messed with.

I seem to recall a time when tomatoes were grown in the USA?

Has that become impossible?

Yes, it is possible to grow tomatoes in the USA.
Personally and professionally as well.
I guess me being located in southern NJ has spoiled me.
Jersey tomatoes! None better.

From mid spring up until fairly late in the autumn I buy a good amount of
produce (the majority of what I buy) from a farm market named ‘Stellas’.
Fresh Jersey corn, tomatoes, peppers, strawberries, blueberries, etc…
Been in business since 1921.
Located on New Freedom Road in Winslow.
