I’m a ‘Gentle Parent’ — I Won’t Make my Kid Say Sorry Because it’s ‘Disingenuous

A ‘gentle parent’ says she doesn’t force her five-year-old son to say sorry as it is “disingenuous” – and says it’s taught him to “hold empathy” and communicate his feelings.

Kelly Medina Enos, 34, turned to gentle parenting when she was struggling with her son, George, then 18 months old, hitting her. The mom turned to TikTok to share her worries and a stranger recommended she looked into gentle parenting – a style that focuses on empathy, respect, and understanding.

Kelly found it “ridiculous” at first but after researching she started to try it out – dropping “don’t” from her vocabulary and telling George what she’d like him to do instead.

Proverbs 13:24 (King James Version): He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.

Same verse, but Tell It Right translation: If ya don't spank your kids when they hit others, they grow up feeling entitled and votin' Dim.

All I know is that if I had hit my mother at any age, she would have taken a potato peeler to half my body.

when my kids were young, I was a gentle parent too. We had a comfortable rubber handle on the device we used to discipline unruly children. It needed to be gentle on our hands and wrist.

And yes, all of our kids are productive, independent and employed.

Dad had been a Big Ten lineman back in the day. No belt was necessary, the hand to the bottom was enough.

I recall hearing “You aren’t sorry? Really? Then I’ll make you feel sorry, go get the belt.” or something along those lines growing up.....

My mom’s favorite method was a few whacks on my behind with a wooden spoon. It was never very hard, but it got the point across.

My dad never said “don’t” too.

He said, “Do that again and I’m gonna bust yer ass.”

Well...kids need direction. I remember working with a mason on a foundation. He lived across the street, so he was babysitting his daughter on the job site. Every ten seconds he was saying “Don’t do that.” I gave the kid a pail and shovel, and sent her to the sandpile. No more problem. Giving then one thing they can do is better than them just doing a dozen things you don’t want them to do. .

There was s single mom next door that had a young son. I heard the neighbor across the street telling him to get out of his garage. The kid said “My mom told me I could play anywhere I want. ”The neighbor called over to her and told her different. She had ahold of her kid and was yelling, pointing at the neighbor...”That’s a bad man!” We were both laughing.
