In other words, they don’t want information released that could be damaging, such as questionable connections that he might have had.

Yes, give the family an early look, maybe a few days. But no veto power over any of it.

King’s family has continued to work toward a comprehensive investigation into the assassination, emphasizing the importance of uncovering the truth while also focusing on preserving the icon’s legacy, Fox Atlanta reported. Uncovering the truth sometimes tarnishes legacies. However, the truth is still required.

Several folks have said that while the files may be declassified, they likely are going to be so heavily redacted, blanked out in places, that it will be near impossible to glean anything new or shocking from them
We will see though.

I remember that night. I was living in my swinging bachelor pad off Dupont Circle. The sky lit up that night. It was just like being back in-country except there were no tracers.

“For us, the assassination of our father is a deeply personal family loss that we have endured over the last 56 years. We hope to be provided the opportunity to review the files as a family prior to its public release,” the family said.
Sounds reasonable, as long as it's understood that MLK's family has no right to redact or withhold any information in the files, and no right to impose any long delays on the release to the public. Same goes for the JFK and RFK families.

King’s family has continued to work toward...uncovering the truth while also focusing on preserving the icon’s legacy... Might be two different things.

Disclosure, even long after the fact, makes the recorded history that much more functional in being able to draw lessons from, and to make more future decisions sound in nature, and not simply ruled by emotions of some past time.
And much of what we “know” of these historic assassinations is rooted in the emotions and myths that have grown up in the absence of the real data.

There might exist some audio transcripts of FBI recordings of MLK Jr, getting down in a hotel with some underage girls that the family would rather not have out there, tarnishing the fellow’s sterling image. From what I heard, third hand, things got pretty ‘jungle’.
All well and good if the subject is a conservative but not an icon and hero of the liberal pantheon. Regardless of his Republican party membership.

My wife thinks they’ll be redacted beyond any usefulness (in order to protect the guilty).

Be sure of the large number of files for each case, I am for allowing the families to see them about 30 days in advance of the rest of us seeing them.
I won’t be surprised if the families sue the president in an effort to keep them private.
There will probably be some information that they don’t want us to see.

James Earl Ray was an uneducated redneck.
He may well have been the shooter.
But no way could he EVER navigate a path to Spain on his own.

“For us, the assassination of our father is a deeply personal family loss that we have endured over the last 56 years. We hope to be provided the opportunity to review the files as a family prior to its public release,” the family said. That's not how it works in a free country. MLK was a public historical figure. I'm guessing LBJ (as rumor has it a former KKK rider) might not be a democrat civil rights 'father'...and that democrats in the FBI were looking for dirt. We'll all know soon.
