In an internal email shared with the Guardian, the secretary of state, Marco Rubio, instructed department staff on Thursday to implement the strict new guidelines for official documentation. “The policy of the United States is that an individual’s sex is not changeable,” the email read.
Rubio’s directive states that “sex, and not gender, shall be used” in official documents including passports and consular report of birth abroad documents.
State department staff on Thursday were ordered to “suspend any application requesting an X sex marker” and to “suspend any application where the applicant is seeking to change their sex marker” from the definition provided in the executive order. The policy affects both current and future passport applications.

The Guardian says the US State Department began issuing passports with the non-binary third gender identification “X” in April of 2022.
The White House told the news site Notus that Passports with the “X” identification are still valid, but issues will surface with renewals.
Freeze them.
That’s cold but I like it. A lot.
That seems only fair. Somebody with an "X" passport was following the law as it was at the time, so they don't deserve to have their passport invalidated immediately. Who knows, they may be currently traveling, etc.
OTOH, renewal time will bring a reckoning with reality.
How about giving people with the X passport 60 days or so to get new passports. Bring the reckoning that much closer.
I like that.
Good point. Those EOs have the bad habit of acting like laws. Temporary (they can be rescinded) but nevertheless they have sweeping legal power while they're in effect.
Little Marco seeking redemption after he humiliated himself during the 2016 primaries.
Ambition is not all bad.
This issue should be addressed, but what about the small percentage of people born with the reproductive organs of one sex but the chromosomes of the opposite one?
Every state already screens newborns for various health conditions and diseases. IMHO, newborns should be screened for chromosomal disorders, too.
Insanity must end. NOW.
There’s no such thing as gender when it comes to sex...it was made up!
Can we get back to SOME normalcy in the US now?
Return to normalcy kicked off big time a few days ago.
That’s right!
How about not letting them back in the US.
How about rescinding that “Real ID” things while he’s at it.
X passport - collectors item?
How was it handled before insanity took hold?
Muslim terrorist men pretend to be women too!
This irritates me. There simply MUST be a way to trap and hold to account people who "leak" information.
It's fairly innocent this time, but people who think it's ok to stab their employer in the back will do so over and over again until they are stopped and made to sample a view of the world through bars.
I’ve got a feeling all of us citizens will have an ability to travel with a whole lot less govt on our persons that we’ve had to pay for within the next 4 years..
Like maybe a free to us voting ID card may be the only thing we need to board a plane, etc..
Good question. I don't know... but the law needs clear legal definitions for male, female, and the exceptions (X). Otherwise, the left will challenge it in court and/or find ways around it, and the insanity will continue.
Just thinking aloud here... Maybe the law should read (for example): "A person's sex or gender on legal documents must be their natural biological sex at birth. All persons naturally born with XY chromosomes and internal and external male reproductive organs are male. All persons naturally born with XX chromosomes and female internal and external reproductive organs are female. Only persons naturally born with XY chromosomes and female reproductive organs or XX chromosomes and male reproductive organs may be listed as X for sex or gender."
