Does anyone have any treatments for sciatica or any recommendations? I have it awful!!
Little background- i trained for the Olympics for 10 years (decathlon) and still workout daily, an hour and a half to two hours. A lot of running, swimming, weightlifting. I'm in good shape- great shape for my age.
I've had a problem with my left hip which has morphed into sciatica the past six months. It was initially annoying but now its almost debilitating. Had to stop three times on my run this morning.
Severe pain is in the lower half of my butt check through my hamstring. Calf and a achillies a bit tight but nothing bad.
Thanks
There are stretch exercises that can be done. A good physical therapist can get them for you.
Hot and cold alternative packs to relax the muscles might also work.
Other than that, you might have a ruptured disc in your lower spine.
If so, youll be looking at spinal surgery. It isnt supposed to be real bad these days. When i had mine done, they chopped bone from the hip blade to put in where they removed the disc. Now i guess they can replace it with some type of mesh.
After surgery, my back felt great, my hip hurt like hell for a while.
I encourage you to do everything posdible other than surgery to solve your misery.
Physical therapy is number one.
Good luck.
a close friend actually went through this process after being diagnosed with AVN
Avascular necrosis (AVN), also known as osteonecrosis, is the death of bone tissue caused by a disruption of blood flow within a bone. The condition usually affects the ends of bones where they terminate in a joint. Though AVN can occur in the ankle, elbow, shoulder, and jaw, it most commonly affects the hip joint.
<> I am not a doctor & didn't sleep at a holiday inn last night. just related what a friend experienced after experiencing similar pain as you seem to have
That's exactly what You NEED TO DO !!! I've been going to a Chiropractor since I sprained My neck in 5th grade gym class. I also have worked for one. They do amazing work. I've seen Patients who could barely walk when they came in and they left the office wanting to go dancing. The one I worked for also did Accupressure and Accupuncture.
You have a pinched Sciatic Nerve in the hip joint and a Chiropractor will do what I call a Lumbar Roll to put Your hip joint back in the right place. Depending upon how badly it's out of place You may hear a slight click, nothing or a thump or clunk.
You might want to sleep on Your side with a pillow between Your knees for a while to keep things in the right position after the Chiropractor gets it back in place.
You might be over training a little.Back off a little.Ice right after activity.Stretch afterwards.Heating pad helps sometimes.Stretches are good.I stretch every morning, the stretches I used to do when I ran.The stinkey greasy stuff helps also(that is extra strength Ben Gay).I’m 87 years old.
IOW, If one has a mechanical problem, it’s best to fix it mechanically.

I also do 72 Russian twists with a 5 lb.dumbbell(just to hold on to).
Go to reputable massage therapist, tell them the issue, and have them work on / stretch your psoas muscles.
Had sciatica pain for 3+ years and learned to just live with it by stretching, laying on my back with my knees/lower legs on a chair at 90 degrees, etc.
THEN-on a visit back home, I was complaining and my Mom suggested having her massage therapist try to help.
BAM! 10 minutes into it, I was fixed and have never had any pain since.
Again, have them stretch your psoas muscles.
YRMV.
BINGO !!!
BTW, know what every single medical professional as well ass chiropractor told me?
Swim. If you have the ability and are located near a swimming facility, join.
Best physical exercise there is.
I get my cortisone injections at a pain clinic that uses an x-ray machine so the doctor can see where he's putting the needle. In fact, I'm going on Tuesday to get another shot in the right side, then following up with another on the left side in two or three weeks. It's been over six months since the last injections.
I also get cortisone shots in both knees periodically because I have bone on bone, plus arthritis in both knees. They said I may end up having to get both of them replaced, but I told the Orthopedic specialist that I hoped I was dead before that came about.
I have also had problems with my left shoulder for many years. I recently had an MRI of the shoulder, and was told that the injuries to the shoulder (rotator cuff tears) went untreated for so many years that the problem can't be fixed with surgery, and I would need a full shoulder replacement, which at 77, I'm not about to submit to, mainly because I haven't heard very good things from people who have had it done. I was getting regular cortisone shots in the shoulder, but after they stopped working, they tried a gel injection, which they had to get prior approval for, but it too didn't work.
Good massage and chiropractor adjustment helps me
Are you a contortionist?
i do; 1/2 mile, three times a week. Started swimming 20+ years ago as i had to cut down on my running which was killing my knees at the time.
SCIATICA IS A METABOLIC DISORDER (INSULIN RESISTANCE) THAT I HAVE MANAGED FOR ALMOST 20 YEARS. INSUFFICIENT DHA & EPA IN YOUR DIET WILL CAUSE SCIATICA SYMPTOMS THAT WILL BE RELIEVED BY DOSING WITH 2 GRAMS OF DHA & EPA PER DAY. KRUSS3@GMAIL.COM
I have back problems, am age 74 and they want to operate. I have Sciatica every day unless I pretreat with LifeFlo. Magnesium or Cream. even morning. Sometimes a second application .Google it, lots of people treat sciatica or even cramps with magnesium- olddave
When I lived in the San Fernando Valley 15 years ago, I had such bad sciatica pain (lower back and down left leg) I went to the ER at the hospital. A “10” on a scale 1-10. It didn’t stop until I got AMAZING help from a “pain management specialist” office, Northridge Pain Management Specialists. They gave me Steroid Injections in a small area in my lower back. Wow, it was great. I got COMPLETE RELIEF, it totally removed my pain. It has not returned since. 😊
You need to find a good pain specialist office. Not every office seems to do a competent job, but try and find an experienced pain doctor in your area to help you.
There is help out there - without surgery needed!

I use a pain management Doctor who give me steroid shots in my back when my Sciatic nerves get bumped by a slipped disc. It works well every time. Not to get wordy, but my Pain Management Doctor found a 9cm mass on my kidney through a Lumbar MRI.
1k MG of high quality turmeric a day and stretching.
Oh and all you folks on FR, check your eGFR blood numbers hopefully it’s 60 or greater.
