King David is famous for being a great king and a terrible father. In order to screw bathsheba —he had to have bathsheba’s husband killed. His child by bathsheba was solomon who was also a great king—but a man who took way too many wives. One of solomon’s children became the next king who was so weak and stupid that the Egyptians raided Jerusalem and removed everything of value from the temple. Then, the idiot king caused the break up of the kingdom into the northern kingdom Israel and southern Kingdom Judah.
Cohen never married. His biblical knowledge appears to be limited. imho People over spritualize the song—which I don’t think is wise because the taste of bitterness lays so heavy in the song.

The Democracy was settled by the election. The country should function as a Republic, as originally intended.
No. But I understand its a story about King David told from David’s point of view (as an old man) with an American Jewish sensibility. Heller uses it as platform to comment on all things historical.
King David despite all his flaws is generally thought of as a “man after God’s own heart.” His poetry is timeless.
When I was a teenager I read Heller’scatch-22 and thought it was funny.
I don’t think I read any of his subsequent books.
