Trump Endorses Mike Johnson to Continue as House Speaker
The New York Times ^ | Dec. 30, 2024, 11:23 a.m. ET | Maggie Haberman, Jonathan Swan

President-elect Donald J. Trump endorsed Mike Johnson for another term as House speaker on Monday, roughly two weeks after Mr. Trump helped put Mr. Johnson’s chances in jeopardy by sinking a bipartisan spending bill that the speaker had negotiated to avert a government shutdown.

The announcement from Mr. Trump on his website, Truth Social, ended days of private discussions by the president-elect and his allies about whether to try to save Mr. Johnson or find another option, as some conservatives have been agitating for.

House Republicans are set to choose a speaker on Friday, just three days before Mr. Trump’s Electoral College victory is certified by a joint session of Congress. Failure to have a speaker in place by then could delay the certification process and focus attention on the deep divisions within the narrow House Republican majority as Mr. Trump is seeking to pursue an ambitious agenda.

“The American people need IMMEDIATE relief from all of the destructive policies of the last Administration. Speaker Mike Johnson is a good, hard working, religious man,” Mr. Trump wrote in a discursive post that praised himself and his campaign, attacked Democrats and mocked the Rev. Al Sharpton, with whom he has a long and contentious history.

Mr. Trump said Mr. Johnson would “do the right thing, and we will continue to WIN. Mike has my Complete & Total Endorsement. MAGA!!!”

A person close to Mr. Trump, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the fact that House Republicans bucked the president-elect on the debt limit demand helped Mr. Trump realize that some members of the House posed challenges, but that Mr. Johnson was not one of them.

Mr. Trump and Mr. Johnson have been talking by phone regularly, and the speaker has told associates that the conversations have been warm and supportive.

Politically it makes sense, Trump doesn’t need the republicans eating themselves alive before he even gets in office and this does give Trump some political capital over Johnson

All choices are relative to the next-best alternative.

This is the only option. Each session will get a chance to change, if needed. He’s keeping his powder dry and letting Johnson show his true allegiance early in the game.

This sounds like some Freepers could have personally written this.

Mike Johnson is at best a compromise RINO squish, IMO. I assume Trump’s “embrace” of him is simply a recognition of a reality by Trump, that it given the outlines of conservatism in the house, it isn’t realistic to expect a MAGA speaker.

Not now, it won’t.
Hold off at least until Oct. or later.

Pragmatism. Doesn’t there need to be a speaker in place Jan 6 to certify the election results?

“ Probably decided a fight was not going to be productive.”

And a fight for what. They’re all in a group that has and deserves a 17% popularity, 77% disapproval rating. Anyone who shines in that cult is torn to shreds like a productive case worker at the VA

Forget it

It’s politically expedient until Trump is firmly in office and then I hope Johnson gets the boot.

I do not like it, but I have to agree. Hopefully Johnson is not like Paul Ryan.

It doesn’t matter who is Speaker.

$37T in debt is crushing. There will be no agenda. There SHOULD be no agenda.

No reason to have a fight when it doesn’t matter who is Speaker.

We should at least avoid the MTG approach of voting out a speaker without having the votes for a replacent to his right.

“Mike Johnson is at best a compromise RINO squish”

I’m curious. Are you normally this ignorant, or are you making a special effort?

How would you like it if I said to you, with no preamble:

I'm curious. Are you normally this much of an asshole, or are you making a special effort?

Let's see. Perhaps you need someone to speak down to your level. Let me illustrate how adults might converse about this:

POSTER 1: I think Mike Johnson is at best a compromise RINO squish."

POSTER 2: I disagree. Can I ask why you say that?

POSTER 1: Well...here is why I think that...

And so on. If you want to have an adult conversation, why don't you try it sometime?

In the meantime, why don't you read a thread today started just today by our very own Lazamataz which I found (especially now, after reading your post) to be not only timely, but spot on: LINK: The Tone and Tenor of Free Republic (vanity)

I read that thread on civility. I fully agree. There are some here who are into personal insults, rather than discuss the issues at hand. We should all be able to discuss and share opinions, without insults.
