On this day in 1970, Presley formally met Nixon at the White House. The famous photo of the two shaking hands struck a nerve with a number of Presley’s fans at the time, as well as supporters of Nixon.
The photo was a pretty big jolt to fans who knew Presley best for his countercultural approach to getting attention: Shaking his hips indecently and performing rock and roll tunes. He had been called everything from “unfit for television” to “a danger to the security of the United States.” He was a countercultural icon for a minute. Nixon, on the other hand, was not. It’s kind of shocking that he wanted anything to do with Presley at all.
Regardless, Presley appeared at the White House to detail his concerns with drug culture at the time. According to Presley, he had conducted a detailed “study of drug abuse and Communist brainwashing techniques.” He had already written a letter to Nixon detailing his findings.

IIRC, Elvis showed up unannounced...............
Nixon wasn’t as bad (or stupid) as the MSM made him out to be.
Nixon was brilliant.
But flawed.
He should have made Sammy VP.
Much less trouble than Agnew or Ford.
It that top picture, it was discovered that Sammy had stolen Nixon’s wallet.....
‘According to Presley, he had conducted a detailed “study of drug abuse...’
And Elvis studied very hard.
Elvis wanted to gift Nixon a .45 and was bemused that the Secret Service did not allow him to present it to Nixon.
Thank the Colonel for Presley’s dug addictions.
Dick’s biggest mistake was asking what happened to Jack?
I have the coffee mug with that image!
Neat
Didn’t Nixon make Elvis an honorary CIA agent or FBI agent?
I still remember his debate with JFK. On Radio Nixon won hands down. Same debate on TV JFK won as Nixon looked “shifty” next to handsome JFK.
Do you have any idea how many white peacenik chicks slept with Sammy Davis Jr due to that one picture? That he would loom over Nixon the warmonger wearing the peace sign.
Linking the Beatles to the drug culture was kind of a bitch move.
I doubt it had much effect however, given that by then the Beatles had openly bragged about using pretty much every drug under the sun.
I have the t-shirt. There are one or two movies about it. The Amazon one is fun.
Elvis was never counter-culture, he never made political pronouncements, and the photo did not create any kind of negative stir.
