A senior Canadian official is threatening to cut off electricity to some 1.5 million Americans and ban the import of US-made beer and liquor as part of a potential trade war with the incoming Trump administration.
Doug Ford, the premier of the Canadian province of Ontario, suggested retaliating against possible tariffs that President-elect Donald Trump has threatened to impose on products from Canada.
During a meeting on Wednesday with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and other premiers, Ford predicted that there is a “100%” chance that Trump will make good on his pledge to slap a 25% tariff on all products that are imported from north of the border.
In response, Ford proposed to “cut off” millions of Americans living along the northern frontier from Ontario’s energy exports, according to Global News.
“It would turn off the lights to a million-and-a-half Americans,” Ford told Global News. “If they come at us we have to stand up for Canadians, we have to stand up for Ontarians.”
Canada is the nation’s No. 1 exporter of energy to the US, which spends around $3 billion annually for Canadian electricity, which is generated using hydropower.
Last year, Canada exported approximately 33.2 million megawatt hours of electricity to the US — the most of any country though it still accounted for less than 1% of total US energy consumption.
Ontario exports energy to border states including Michigan and New York.
Ontario government officials told Global News that Ford is mulling “escalation maneuvers” that are still being worked out.

Which country needs the other most? Hmmm?
Brazil will be happy to clear cut the Amazon rain forest in order to supply all our wood product needs.
That’s going to hurt Canada far more than the US.
“Canadian commies toughen up. And, of course, I blame Canada.”
It’s perfectly okay with what Canada is doing. No reason for us to drink Canadian beer. We can drink what Canada won’t import. Also, no need to worry about energy. We can reroute inputs into the grid with minimal fuss. Plus it would be on Whitmer and Hochul to explain that to their respective constituencies as to why they are using Canadian energy in the first place.
I’m sure Chris Wright as the new Department of Energy Secretary will be able to take care of the issue. “”As Secretary of Energy, Chris will be a key leader, driving innovation, cutting red tape, and ushering in a new ‘Golden Age of American Prosperity and Global Peace,’” Trump said in a statement.” (DJT 11/16/24 NPR)

As much as I detest Michael Moore, I like the movie.
He could get away with the beer - I believe he may pay some “consequences” if he arbitrarily cuts off power to American Citizens when Trump is in the WH..he isn’t a Head of State and, if he becomes a actual threat, he isn’t off limits....
Canadian Bacon is a quote gold mine!
We have an the lumber we need in the piney woods of East Texas.
Money lost to Canada...I’m good with that.
Mostly because of the people in it.
Michael Moore not so much.
I even have the soundtrack CD.
Canadian forest products are subsidized.
It’s tough to compete with companies that get their raw materials free or cheap.
Gett’n dirty fast 😁
Great plan! Your country spent a large amount of money to build a generator facility while has a long life. The money spent needs to be repaid, the employees need the job and there is no local market for what becomes excess electricity if you cut off the export. And longterm you force you current customer to build their own power source. Where does that leave you Canada?
Does he really want to get in a trade war with Trump?
Doug Ford is the Premier of Ontario. That equates to a state governor, which technically, if you understand the words, is literally “Head of State”.
That “measley” 1-2% is in two states that will suffer most from an energy shortage in the dead of winter.
Also, the beer: Canada imports from the USA about $30 million less than the USA buys from the frozen north. I’m surprised it’s that close, I only buy 2 types of American beer, and that’s rarely. My local distributor has had to send stale US beer (how can you tell?) back to the warehouser even in summer.
As usual the Left are angry children lashing out stupidly. They want to do as much damage as they can so they’ll y employ the nuclear option; cut power instead of upping the rates. Let’s see how long it takes them to realize the real world result of cutting the power.
That is a bald-faced lie.
Canadian stumpage fees are lower than American stumpage fees because the Canadian logging companies have to survey, build maintain and decommission their logging roads, while the USFS builds and maintains the roads for logging in US national forests.
Nice try though. Seems that EVERY lawsuit regarding the forestry/lumber/softwood issue has been settled in favor of Canada, but one side keeps on screaming the canard "unfair!"
I remember my father and his good friend drinking “Carling’s Black Label” and “Seagram’s V.O.” on vacation at Kelly’s Pine Lodge about 40 miles from Sudbury, back in the early 60’s. Now it’s owned by Molson/Coors, not available in very many places in the U.S. Now, Dow beer I’m not familiar with. Back in the states they mostly drank Rheingold, another defunct beer. I remember my first whole bottle my dad gave me on a hot day when I was about 14, early ‘60s. It was delicious.
