A senior Canadian official is threatening to cut off electricity to some 1.5 million Americans and ban the import of US-made beer and liquor as part of a potential trade war with the incoming Trump administration.
Doug Ford, the premier of the Canadian province of Ontario, suggested retaliating against possible tariffs that President-elect Donald Trump has threatened to impose on products from Canada.
During a meeting on Wednesday with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and other premiers, Ford predicted that there is a “100%” chance that Trump will make good on his pledge to slap a 25% tariff on all products that are imported from north of the border.
In response, Ford proposed to “cut off” millions of Americans living along the northern frontier from Ontario’s energy exports, according to Global News.
“It would turn off the lights to a million-and-a-half Americans,” Ford told Global News. “If they come at us we have to stand up for Canadians, we have to stand up for Ontarians.”
Canada is the nation’s No. 1 exporter of energy to the US, which spends around $3 billion annually for Canadian electricity, which is generated using hydropower.
Last year, Canada exported approximately 33.2 million megawatt hours of electricity to the US — the most of any country though it still accounted for less than 1% of total US energy consumption.
Ontario exports energy to border states including Michigan and New York.
Ontario government officials told Global News that Ford is mulling “escalation maneuvers” that are still being worked out.

I guess you’ll have to find some other sucker to slough off your Bud Light.
Governor Trudeau needs to get this mouthy little POS back in line.
Sooory Doogie. Not buying your flaccid threat. You’re an inconsequential pile of poutine, eh?
The Ford family are thieving grifters.
Yeah. That won’t play well for Canada.
All Trump is demanding is actual fair trade. Gee, wonder why that has some Canadian officials in a panic?
Wasn't he the Mayor of Toronto that was involved in a crack cocaine scandal a few years ago?
Why can’t the Canucks just control their border?
They have no problem giving US anal exams when we go into their country.
That was his brother Rob. In his defense, in spite of his drug troubles and questionable associates, there is no evidence that he was corrupt.
A funny story about Rob Ford. A CBC reporter tried questioning him and, out of the blue, one of Rob Ford’s associates told Rob Ford that the reporter called him fat. Rob Ford to offense to that and physically aggressively went after the reporter and the reporter had to run for his life.
“It would turn off the lights to a million-and-a-half Americans”
There would be an angry demand for an “occupied” Canada.
Seeding, fomenting, and arming an insurrection up there of the rurals vs the urban rot would be easy and rewarding.

LOL.. Go ahead and cut it.
And we already have enough good beer.
And by the way, the tariff just went yo 50%.
It will hurt the Canadian brewers more than USA.
Plywood and lunber are a bigger problem than electricity and beer.
Trade Balance
The main destinations of Canada exports on Beer were United States ($102M),
Sweden ($889k), France ($756k), China ($696k), and Mexico ($384k). In 2022,
Canada imported $364M in Beer, mainly from Netherlands ($117M), United States ($78.5M),
United Kingdom ($43.4M), Ireland ($22.7M), and Germany ($20.6M).
Guess who installed both Trudeau and Ford.
Canada has a Deep State, too.
You’ll have more Bud Light for yourself.
Cutting off energy would hurt Quebec and Ontario most. My concern is that my federal government my try and prevent Alberta from exporting its oil to the States.
But, he's an amateur and so is Trudeau.
Trump, on the other hand, is a master of the art of negotiation.
It's always good to remember that Trump's goal in negotiating is to reach a win-win point, where everyone is happy. Right now Trump feels like the U.S. isn't getting a fair shake and he wants to correct that.
And he will.
Ha—leave them stuck with Molson! Or, with Molson part of Coors now, take that away from them too?
Sell? Ok, if you shut off electricity what will you use to replace those dollars? Do you think we would still pay you?
I used to do a lot of camping and fishing in Quebec. Stunning scenery, awesome fishing. The last time I was there was for the 2005 Montreal Jazz Fest, had a great time. I didn’t notice any American beers being drunk, although they were available. Almost without exception the Canucks and foreigners were drinking either Labatt’s, Molson, or Moosehead. So, banning American beer would be just a small dent in American beer brewers profits. As far as cutting power, they may as well cut their noses also. The power companies would go broke. Ford is just another blowhard, have another drink, and go away.
