Do You Dress Like An American Tourist Abroad? These Signs Are A Dead Giveaway.
HuffPost ^ | Dec 12, 2024 | Jillian Wilson

If you’ve ever seen the iconic “Modern Family” clip where Mitchell is increasingly bothered that people in France know he’s American just by looking at him — that is, until he purchases an outfit from a local store and fits in with the locals — you’ll understand the plight of American tourists. Sometimes, even with the right language skills or a demure presence, our clothes alone give us away.

This is because Americans have a specific way of dressing, stylists say, whether they’re visiting Europe, Asia or another locale. And while fashion is different in every city and every country (and among different groups in said place), Americans still manage to stick out no matter where they are.

Below, stylists from around the world share the styles that make Americans stand out from locals and how to dress like an international traveler instead.

Wearing Athletic Wear

Being Too Dressy

Having Perfect Makeup And Hair

Wearing Too Many Logos

Dressing Too Beachy

Don’t be afraid to try out new styles and get inspiration from the world around you

But isn’t ‘Fanny’ a female proper name or nickname there?

I try to visit churches. This is best done in the morning or between 5pm and 6pm.

Dress as you would for church in the USA.

I usually keep my debit card, passport and big bills in a zippered inside jacket pocket.

During the first week of May in 2006, I was walking around Paris in a short-sleeved blouse and jeans. Everybody else was still wearing jackets and sweaters. That probably pegged me as an American. The temperature was perfect for me as I live in central BY State.

Well, when I go to a foreign country I am a tourist and I am an American. So what? Not interested in blending in with the locals.

But I never wear athletic clothing in public, and I refuse to wear anything with a brand name on it.

Wasn’t it Milan that had a high rate of Covid? I remember reading that a lot of Chinese work in the leather industry, and many went home to China at Christmas, and brought the virus back with them.

I remember that in the 1950s and the 1960s people dressed up to go shopping and when they traveled. Never saw my father leave for the airport without a tie.

I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes about 25 years ago. I still take only oral meds for it. A few years ago my endocrinologist put me on Jardiance. I’ve lost over 30 pounds gradually since then. I’m down to 140.

I skied there on my birthday in late July one year! Terrible conditions, but late July skiing was awesome.

My wife and I visited and hiked there. We also stayed in the Grindelwald region and hiked there a lot. It is one of the most spectacular places on earth.

There are a lot of Chinese in Milan, working in every area of the fashion industry.

My Vietnamese wife is quite a bit younger than I. Her family is well off by Vietnamese, maybe by our standards as well. They won’t wear anything without some big name logo on it.

Last trip there I suggested that we should go to the market, buy a thousand blank t-shirts and blouses. Then buy some gold glitter. we print “WTF?” as a logo. They will think it’s a new American brand and buy out our stock.

She didn’t think it was funny. I laughed my a** off.

My grandmother told me that in her day, if a man was smoking on the street and a lady approached him, he’d throw away his cigarette...

That's remarkable. But I don't think it was that long ago when men stood up when women entered or left a room.
