If you’ve ever seen the iconic “Modern Family” clip where Mitchell is increasingly bothered that people in France know he’s American just by looking at him — that is, until he purchases an outfit from a local store and fits in with the locals — you’ll understand the plight of American tourists. Sometimes, even with the right language skills or a demure presence, our clothes alone give us away.
This is because Americans have a specific way of dressing, stylists say, whether they’re visiting Europe, Asia or another locale. And while fashion is different in every city and every country (and among different groups in said place), Americans still manage to stick out no matter where they are.
Below, stylists from around the world share the styles that make Americans stand out from locals and how to dress like an international traveler instead.
Wearing Athletic Wear
Being Too Dressy
Having Perfect Makeup And Hair
Wearing Too Many Logos
Dressing Too Beachy

Now it’s time to focus on gaining weight, get it back to the 160s. Changing my bad habits: no soft drinks, healthy food, more exercise, etc.
Which accent....NE, Southern, Mid-West, Western, etc. ?
I had heard the Brooklyn accent was a European favorite.
My Dallas Cowboys jacket gives me away every time............
I was in Galveston hanging out on the Seawall when I witnessed a bunch of Chinese men get out of a van, strip down to their underwear and go swimming in the Gulf. It was bizarre but hilarious at the same time. 😆
I’m wearing a suit and tie literally right now. Going out to eat.
Mainly I was referring to the fact that an Italian woman never leaves the house unless dressed to the nines even if it’s just for milk and eggs while the young American woman is perfectly happy in a hoodie and jeans. It’s. Cultural.
The Yankees hat is ubitiqious.
LOL. Never were flattering for me…..
Yankees, Bulls (a leftover from Michael Jordan), Cowboys, and Lakers are popular worldwide.
Because despite all the negative press they all want to be American!
I taught English is Prague for a short time…. I met many Czechs who wanted to come to The States to do film (like Milos Forman) or tennis or golf…
If I’m traveling somewhere, I do everything I can to fit in and look native. I don’t want to stand out under any circumstances.
My grandmother told me that in her day, if a man was smoking on the street and a lady approached him, he’d throw away his cigarette...
(And she’d never let me go to church without a hat and gloves...)
Teach yourself to use a knife and fork without switching hands. Americans cutting our food then dropping the knife to pick up the good with fork in right hand is about as nonsensical as Brits not rinsing soap off their dishes. Both are sure identifiers.
My husband - English Mom/Italian Dad - and I argue about this all the time. I was trained in the American way, and I just can’t become comfortable with the Continental way (not least because it always seems a little crude to me...)
I was in Prague in early 2020 and a young woman got on the Metro wearing a Stetson and a MAGA button on her lapel. There was no mistaking her!
I think that’s called ‘Being the Grey Man’.
Well, the Swiss are Swiss. However, Zermatt is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Skied there a couple of times….
And that’s because we eat worse, not better.
LOL! How do you clear a hotel room of Frenchmen? Throw a bar of soap in there!
Yes the C-Word is okay in the UK but ‘fanny’ is offensive. Go figure….
