BALTIMORE (WBFF) – A shocking discovery out of a Baltimore City high school, where Project Baltimore has found hundreds of students are failing. It’s a school where a student who passed three classes in four years, ranks near the top half of his class with a 0.13 grade point average.

Tiffany France thought her son would receive his diploma this coming June. But after four years of high school, France just learned, her 17-year-old must start over. He’s been moved back to ninth grade.

“He's stressed and I am too. I told him I'm probably going to start crying. I don't know what to do for him,” France told Project Baltimore. “Why would he do three more years in school? He didn't fail, the school failed him. The school failed at their job. They failed. They failed, that's the problem here. They failed. They failed. He didn't deserve that.”

France’s son attends Augusta Fells Savage Institute of Visual Arts in west Baltimore. His transcripts show he’s passed just three classes in four years, earning 2.5 credits, placing him in ninth grade. But France says she didn’t know that until February. She has three children and works three jobs. She thought her oldest son was doing well because even though he failed most of his classes, he was being promoted. His transcripts show he failed Spanish I and Algebra I but was promoted to Spanish II and Algebra II. He also failed English II but was passed on to English III.

Maybe the old days of getting a legitimate eighth grade information and then go earn a living was a good idea for some people who just aren’t cut out for school.

If anybody, other than himself, failed him it would be his mother. Is a father around?

The kid is obviously qualified to teach in Baltimore public schools. What’s the problem?

I find that pretty hard to believe, even in Baltimore.

Consider this: This is an example as to why we need a draft. Without some sort of “forced” discipline (so the individual learns personal discipline!) matched with “training” in this case “training” with basic education how can he\she ever be anything but a hoodlum.

Have a new draft law where this manpower pool is essentially a “reserve”. Make it very difficult to deploy in mass overseas for FedGov adventures. If the individual after “training” wishes to switch over to regular service subject to needs they can but it’s their choice.

Might be easier to do then actually getting state educational establishments to change.

That’s what I picked up on. We were always on our daughter, and as a teacher — parental involvement is a must for student success.
When I taught at the day treatment center, the big question from parenst was, “Why my chil’ ain’ be learnin?”

When we explained that he/they spent most of their time cutting up and avoiding work — oh the outrage. THEIR LITTLE ANGELS!?!? NEVER...

I now work with special needs kids and the stress is so much lower and the joy in the classroom is so much more. I have to sometimes change diapers — it’s worth it.

Gen Pop... depressing and pointless.

They should make this mother happy by going ahead and awarding her son his diploma, and to make up for past sins have some college award him his doctorate in engineering.

Worst idea ever, nothing personal.

You can’t make the bread better by spoiling the dough with bad yeast. Why treat the military like a reform school, when that is not it’s purpose?

On another note - if this was the middle of the road of a class of 120, who appears to have pretty much been absent for 2/3’s of his classes - how many ‘educators’ are being supported to teach the handful of kids even showing up?

Sounds like a bunch of ghost students, supported by ghost educators - everyone protecting their phony baloney jobs and not caring that they’re turning their own community into a cesspool. They get theirs, all that matters.

Looks like he’s up for automatic university admission with a full ride scholarship, being near the top of his class.

I’m sure the color of his skin has nothing to do with it, nothing at all.

This is not the failure of the public school system, this is the results they want.

When public schools were first established in the late 1800s the goal was to assimilate all the millions of immigrants into our nation and culture. The “great melting pot”.

Assimilation is no longer the goal, separation by groups and hatred for America and anyone that does not look like you is the goal.

Um yes. You excelled in all your classes except one, indicating a strong student encountered something out of the ordinary in one class. This leads the observer to be suspicious about what happened in that one class.

Compare that the the anecdote of this news story, wherein a student has been enrolled in a school for three years and apparently has fulfilled practically no requirements for any class. A school cannot compel compliance with academic requirements. A teacher cannot hold a pencil for a student and do the work for him. These are two completely different stories, other than both happening in a school.

Forced conscription or mandatory military service has a checkered past, but it’s proven useful in societies where that discipline is seen as virtuous. Our “leaders” are doing everything they can to remove anything nationalist as virtue.

This article actually reminded me of Thomas Sowell’s book “Black Rednecks and White Liberals.” In it, he talked about the abolitionist movement in America and made a very interesting and thought-provoking point. The anti-abolitionists have been castigated as racists, but many anti-abolitionists had a larger concern than race when making the case against blanket emancipation. The biggest concern, and this was shared even by free blacks in the north, was the flood of illiterate slaves that would suddenly overwhelm institutions across the country. And guess what? They were right. Many black and white teachers saw it as a mission to move to the south, establish schools, and do everything they could to educate those masses. For some, it was a worthwhile endeavor, but for many, it was futile.

Slaves worked and had places to sleep. Were there some vicious, racist slaveholders? No doubt, but many slaves were regarded as an integral part of the slaveholder’s estate. Even Andrew Jackson’s oldest servant, “Uncle Alfred,” stayed at his estate, the Hermitage, after he was freed and later was the first head of the society dedicated to preserving it and Jackson’s legacy. George Washington, on his deathbed, demanded the unconditional freedom of all of his slaves even when it was considered an unpopular thing to do. Blacks would’ve been much better served to have been educated en masse, given the skills required to be productive members of society, before being just thrown into society with nothing. How was that any different than what we’re seeing today where kids come out of high school and can’t comprehend modern literature or even do simple math?

Blacks have been done a disservice in this country but not for the reasons the left state. Blacks in the early 20th century were substantially better off than they are today. They were allowed to run their own businesses and even schools. Sowell talks about black schools in the northeast where blacks overwhelmingly outperformed their white counterparts in local schools, but as soon as government got involved, things went downhill. Think about that. For all the alleged good the Democrats have done for blacks, how can anyone with an IQ over 80 say that blacks are better off now than they were even just 100 years ago?
