After years of false starts, the iconic British rock band Pink Floyd has agreed to sell their recorded-music and name-and-likeness rights to Sony Music for approximately $400 million, sources confirm to Variety.
The deal, one of the largest of many in recent years, apparently has finally concluded despite decades of ongoing infighting and bitter words between the bandmembers, notably chief songwriters Roger Waters and David Gilmour;

I wonder how they divvy it up. Based on longevity with the band? Based on number of songs you wrote? Based on whether you were a founding member? Based on which instrument you played? Based on your popularity with the fans? Based on how much trouble and turmoil you caused? If somebody joined for only a few years after their popularity peaked, does that person get a small cut?
I could see a real challenge calculating who gets what amount.
Probably would have gotten $500 million during the salad days of Trump.
Wonder how much of that makes its way to the creators.
I wonder if they agreed on how the pie would be sliced before it came out of the oven?

Yup, the stats on Spotify alone are eye opening, then there are the other services as you mentioned. For example, Queen songs have had billions of streams on just Spotify (that’s billions, not millions) and a big majority of Queen’s listeners are under 35. This is why you see music catalogs being snapped up even for older artists.

Yes, looks like Wright’s and Barrett’s heirs get a cut.
The Beatles, Stones, Who, Pink Floyd, etc. are the Mozarts, Beethovens, Bachs, of classic rock.
Years from now that’s what people will be listening to. Just as no one cares about modern works of classical music, nobody will care about new rock music.
I think “Dogs” is Gilmour’s best work.
You’d sure think they hammered out those niggling details in advance, wouldn’t you? Imagine the years of bickering and fighting that went on. You never get to see how the sausage was made for a reason.
Rick was so great as was Syd.
