I was born in Springfield, Ohio. My wife, Fran, and I have lived our entire lives less than 10 miles from this city.
When we were dating in high school, we would go there to see movies at the Regent or State Theater or to eat fried clams at Howard Johnson’s. I remember Fran taking the bus about eight miles from our hometown, Yellow Springs, to Springfield to shop at Wren’s Department Store. Over the years, we’ve eaten countless doughnuts from Schuler’s Bakery, worshiped at St. Raphael Catholic Church and we logged many work hours there when I represented Springfield in the U.S. House and Senate.
Springfield has a rich history of providing refuge for the oppressed and being a place of opportunity. As a stop on the Underground Railroad, the Gammon House, which still stands, was a safe haven for escaped slaves seeking freedom. And, as a stop on the Old National Road, America’s first east/west federal highway, Springfield attracted many settlers both before and after the Civil War. Immigrants from Ireland, Greece, Germany, Italy and other countries helped build the city into what it is today.
For a long time, commerce and manufacturing flourished in Springfield, which earned the title “Champion City” after the founding there of the agriculture implement giant Champion Machine Company.
But the city hit tough times in the 1980s and 1990s, falling into serious economic decline as manufacturing, rail commerce and good-paying jobs dwindled. Now, however, Springfield is having a resurgence in manufacturing and job creation. Some of that is thanks to the dramatic influx of Haitian migrants who have arrived in the city over the past three years to fill jobs.
They are there legally. They are there to work.

He’ll just have to retire, and enjoy his ill-gotten gains. Better than the ones that grift until they’re carried out of office feet-first, I suppose. But not by much.
Mike of the Whine, RINO (not so) extraordinaire.
I take this guy about a seriously as Mitt Romney, which is to say That I am far more concerned about when my dog is whining, than him.
Don’t forget, DeWine operates a Haitian ‘charity’ Foundation, Like the Clinton’s do....
And of course the purpose of his foundation is the same as that of the Clintons: Launder taxpayer and donor money into their own pockets.
DeWine is a convinced RINO
Oh, and I saw an interview of a lady in Springfield, Ohio, on TV a couple days ago.
She claimed to be a cashier at a grocery store, and said that since the horde of Haitians arrived, on any average day, her register transactions are TEN dollars EBT and other welfare cards for every ONE dollar of cash, check or regular credit/debit card payments.
If her report is accurate, that’s not a sustainable economy.
I mean, DeDoofus admits it. He hasn't been anywhere near Springfield in decades.
GFY. NeverTrump Troll.
**He’s done either way.**
No he’ not. If Trump wins guess who gets to appoint Vance’s successor?
**This is why Hogan in Maryland must be defeated.**
Come on. Let him back stab us from the confines of a blue state. Think committees. Senator DeWine was the same but Ohio was red. No excuse.
86+ responses so far. None on who DeWine will pick.
Thank you for not telling me to go to DU.
Mike DeRino needs to retire-o.
Rather than hurting Trump, I think tje statement reflects more on deWine as an incompetent and uninformed public official.
“I don’t recognize...”
Willful denial.
"Springfield has a rich history of providing refuge for the oppressed and being a place of opportunity. As a stop on the Underground Railroad, the Gammon House, which still stands, was a safe haven for escaped slaves seeking freedom"
Hey, DeDoofus, this is the same newspaper that accused you and every white man alive of institutional privilege and dehumanizing black men. It's amazing the NYT didn't print a disclaimer on your graf of white knighting and a clumsy attempt to culturally appropriate emancipation! Or did you miss Pinch IV's seditious 1619 Project, run by his house handmaiden, Nikole Hannah-Jones with the big floppy shoes and the Ronette McDonald hair?
More to the point, Doofus, this is the NYeT that did everything but call you a murderer for the East Palestine derailment, the NYeT defamed you for school safety measures; made you the focus of many, many COVID agitpropaganda pieces; the NYet repeatedly put the blame on you for the Oregon District slayings; and the NYeT pilloried you for signing a fetal heartbeat bill! You had a hand in overturning Roe! How dare you criticize President Trump. *spit*
Search for yourself. Page after page after page after page of hit pieces on DeWine, and yet he can't wait to become a tool for the Sulzbergermeisters. That kind of vicious self-loathing, if I was his family, I'd have him involuntarily committed.
"But the city hit tough times in the 1980s and 1990s, falling into serious economic decline as manufacturing, rail commerce and good-paying jobs dwindled. Yeah the jobs are because the migrants came. So incredibly lame. This is Kamala Harris wrongthink at its laziest.
I know DeDoofus is a Trump-hating boob, but ... I am so sick and tired of the wave of human trash posing as goobernors not even a quarter of a way into the New Century. Is it really any wonder we haven't had a Governor as President since Bush?
When was it ever ok for fundamentally-flawed megalomaniacs like Cuomo and Gruesome and Witchmer and Grisham -- and on the GOP side, DeWine and Bevin and Lt. Gov. Steele -- to even pursue the office? Why is the process not weeding them out?
Safest bet would be DeWine picking State Senator Matt Dolan.
DeWine endorsed Dolan in the primary that Moreno won.
Dolan dislikes Trump and is the scion of the filthy rich clan that owns the MLB Guardians and some other sports teams.
So Vance is sworn in and another never-Trumper is sworn in which the Trump supporters will have to rally behind in the next election as no one challenges incumbents in primaries.
Worth it? These rinos are still out there. Why do we keep making more work for ourselves?
Karl Marx was a journalist most of his adult life he even started his own news paper in 1884.
Wonder how the news media became so biased.
That’s because you aren’t listening. I wonder if he watched Ramaswamy’s town hall there last night? They only had room for 350, but there were over a thousand people who wanted to be there. Of course, no local officials showed up, though they were personally invited. There was a State Senator there. From what I’ve heard, more than one local official is making money hand over fist off of the deal. $200-900 per Haitian paid to the landlord, with up to 20 in a dwelling. Of course, the Americans who had lived in the dwellings were made to move out. Always follow the money.
Haitian writer Edwidge Danticat delivers an emotionally charged closing lecture and reading. She unsuccessfully fought back tears when evoking the fate of the more than 200,000 Haitians made stateless by a 2013 ruling of the Dominican Republic Supreme Court. These Haitians are hunted down, persecuted, and deported.
—
So, what is your point? Are you blaming everything on the U.S? Hate America crap? I don’t think so. Who chopped down all the trees in Haiti and made the Island west of the Dominican Republic a wasteland, depleted of all natural resources? Many times the blame is much closer to home. There is a spiritual darkness over Haiti, Voodoo, cannibalism, necklacing? It’s very dark, spiritual wickedness in high places. Exporting that darkness may amount to an unrealized risk, a negative supernatural force that is unwilling to yield or withdraw.
Haiti is now a lawless state much like Somalia. We tried to help them too but Blackhawk Down ended that endeavor. Then there is the tragedy of Ukraine and the Middle East. Damn! But we must alway provide strong unwavering support to Israel, the only state that is not a theocracy or a monarchy. The Bible warns us about that.
Maybe we should investigate the leftist Catholic nuns and priests in Latin America, pushing their Marxist Liberation Theology (precursor to CRT), which led to the fall of Honduras, Nicaragua, etc.
I think we need to take care of America first, before we become a lawless state too. The Bible says we should be kind to sojourners but we must never forget Genesis 16:12. Just my $0.02. Somebody’s gotta say it.
Good grief, those people couldn’t operate an electric toaster or a microwave oven, but they’re just given driving licenses without testing? Unreal.
