Here's How to Spot Great Wine at a Grocery Store

If you live in certain states, wine can be found at the supermarket, which helps trim a stop off your run of errands on a busy day. I mean, we're certainly not skipping the wine, are we? Grocery store wine gets a bad rap for being generic, boring and altogether a bit basic, but that doesn't mean there aren't some goof bottles to be found among the hard iced teas and boozy seltzer.

To get the skinny on good grocery store vino, we turned to an expert in the field. "You can find good wine at the grocery store," says Jade Palmer, wine manager at Hop City Craft Beer and Wine in Atlanta. "There are plenty of producers who have large production," the kind that makes consumer-friendly pricing possible, "but their production is well done," she says.

The key here is knowing what to look for in "over-delivery," that is, wines that punch above their price class in terms of quality. Palmer offers several tips and tricks for finding wines at the grocery store that are more than worthy of your dinner table.

(Oh, and if you're wondering if you should pop that open red wine in the fridge to keep it fresh, we asked an expert to weigh in.)

Does the wine come in a box, have a twist top, or do you need a cork screw to open it? That is how I judge wine.

By the way, I live in a town of 2,800 that has 32 wineries. You can get all the wine you want free just by dropping in and tasting at a few.

I like wine that tastes good to me.

Is one required to die to get to this place or can it be reached by road?

Are you located near Grand Junction? I remember seeing a number of wineries next to the Colorado River while driving on I-70. Never stopped, though, and I regret it.

My sources are mostly confined to: Weingut Eduard Kroth (Briedel, Germany, Mosel), Lost Oak Winery (Burleson, TX), Fall Creek Vineyards (Driftwood, TX), and Ankida Ridge (near Lynchburg, VA). I have been a customer of Eduard Kroth’s for over 45 years, dating back to when I was stationed in Germany. Such fond memories from the many times I stopped there.

It’s no surprise that our battalion’s Hails & Farewells took place within a ten minute drive from my apartment. There were numerous restaurants along the Mosel that were unknown to those stationed at Bitburg and Spangdahlem,

My landlord didn’t mind our quarterly after parties, we weren’t that loud.

It went to three bucks, the last time I was there (couple of years). Not bad, though; I went through quite a lot when I lived nearby.
