In case you didn’t know, August 16 is National Rum Day. And honestly, I don’t care. In fact, the best way to not get me to drink a specific spirit is to tell me I’m supposed to drink it on a specific day. Give me a margarita on St. Patrick’s Day, when I’m supposed to be drinking Irish whiskey, but not on Cinco de Mayo, when I may well be drinking... Irish whiskey. You get my drift. And industry-created “days” of unknown origin are even more annoying. So let me be clear, I am not advocating that you drink any of the delicious rums mentioned below on August 16th. In fact, as far as I’m concerned you should go out of your way to drink anything except rum for the day. But that leaves another 364 days of the calendar to check them out. So with that in mind, here are some amazing sipping rums that have come out since the last National Rum Day. Explore, expand your horizons, and enjoy.

My favorite, Barcelo Anejo, is not on the list.
Almost all of these are over my price range. I drink in the $40-$50 a bottle price range, probably because I have rum of one kind or another almost every evening. I could never afford a $100 bottle except as a sipper.
What’s your favorite?
When I could find it, I did enjoy the Diplomatico Anejo. I haven’t found it in many many years.
El Dorado from Guyana. It goes down smooooothly.
Carried over from the Gin thread....
“1 Goslings Black Seal #2 Mount Gay Eclipse. #3 Callwood Arundel Cane Rum.”
I drink Flor de Cana 12 year regularly, but I like Zacapa 23 more than that, just can’t afford it. I would have to say Z23 is my favorite everyday rum.
I was entry level with Appleton 20+ years ago, and it was truly my gateway. I have tried many many rums, and my favorites are almost always somewhere in the Caribbean and just beyond.
I’m totally a pirate in this regard.
Mount Gay Eclipse is nice but not dark enough for me. It’s a very nice rum if that’s all that’s available, and many times, that’s it.
My cousin is a big Captain fan
Sailor Jerry or Captain Morgan Spiced Rums are good and widely available, at least in my area.
Captain is the grossest of the gross. Sorry, in this regard, I guess I’m a rum snob.
But thank you for doing the work of starting a rum thread! I do mean that earnestly!
I keep Bacardi Gold or similar in the house because it makes my wife’s excellent pecan pies even better.
You are very welcome
If you like dark rums you gotta try Black Seal. Literally black rum that’s perfect for sipping or mixing. Dark ‘n Stormy. Heavenly 😎
Eclipse is a great mixing rum, but Mount Gay XO is a better variant for sipping neat or on ice.
El Dorado 15 is excellent too, as are Zacapa and Barbancourt. For the really funky Jamaican variety, Hampden Estate is tough to beat.
I generally avoid spiced rums, but Plantation Stiggins' Fancy Pineapple rum is worth adding to any bar.
Many moons ago in my misspent youth when I used to travel to Puerto Rico regularly on business I always brought a few bottles of Ron del Barrilito home. Best I ever tasted. I was never big on hard liquor, but I could sip on that stuff.
You’re the FReeper with the wife who makes great pecan pies!
Just a few days ago I make pecan pie bars, and added some bourbon. It was a new to me recipe so my first trial. It was quite good, but I wanted more bourbon, being a native Southerner.
Please send me your wife’s pie recipe if you’re allowed. I’m energized to try tweaking the recipe I was given to use.
I’ve had Black Seal. I actually still have a piece of a bottle in my cabinet. I probably have 6 different rums available for different purposes. Black Seal is vey nice. I do love to sip it. Thank you.
