A US Navy leader was demoted for installing an illegal WiFi network on a warship, a new report says.

Grisel Marrero installed a Starlink network on the USS Manchester and named it "STINKY."

She lied to and misled her commanding officer at least three times when questioned about the network, per the report.

A senior US Navy enlisted leader who was demoted after she was caught running illegal WiFi on a warship used a leadership association's debit card to pay for its monthly bills and named it "STINKY," according to a new report.

Grisel Marrero, who was the command senior chief of the USS Manchester, installed and operated the unauthorized network during a deployment in 2023, lying to her commanders and falsifying records to cover up its presence, according to a Navy charge sheet seen by Business Insider.

Hard to believe she was not at least released under a Dishonorable Discharge. Master Chief would be hard enough to achieve without screwing up like that. I’d say her superiors need to be looked into also. She must have had some “pull” with someone.

Arrogance is always what destroys great nations and powers.

The lone superpower. Once our hedonistic political class took that to heart, it was all over.

E3, time in jail, and forfeit her pension.

That’s what should have happened.

" Master Chief would be hard enough to achieve without screwing up like that."

She was Senior Chief, not Master Chief. But she would have made Master Chief if it hadn't been for those kids and that stinky dog.

Don't disagree there. But a reduction to E3 would be nice. Put her on permanent deck swabbing and paint chipping details for the rest of her career.

They refer to her as having been a Command Senior MCPO, but that is not her rank in the photo.

She was the Command Senior Chief. I assume there was no Master Chief aboard.

I think of it as much more serious, prison and dishonorable, in effect, she might as well have been an enemy agent and she was the command senior chief corrupting and turning all the other chiefs.

Those who helped and joined her should all be busted so low that they will never again be in a position to lead or harm us, they lack leadership, character, and morality, and can’t be trusted, and the enlisted under all these NCOs probably knew about what their leaders were doing for themselves with special treatment and total disregard for their positions and as examples.

I see this as a major scandal.

Our ships are untrackable! Siper duper secret stealth everything, except that glaring aurora borealis wifi signal.

Sounds like a good description.

Women do not belong on ships or in any group that may be involved in combat.

As my ship’s EMCON nazi, I would have had a cardiac event.

Oh, yeah. "Excuse me, Senior Chief, where does this fit in our EMCON plan?" She couldn't possibly have concealed this without help.

The Navy is installing its own Starlink dishes because it’s a phased array that points a pencil beam nearly straight up or at angles 45 degrees or higher. The low probably of detection let alone being able to stay in that pencil beam as it sweeps across the sky at faster than supersonic speeds. This is why the Navy wants to use it’s. No other system has these capabilities. SpaceX is launching a dedicated military Starlink which will likely use the same phased array antennas at a different frequency band close by. The risk was not detecting the beam in the sky it was having a unsecured network which data could be sent off ship without going through the military firewalls or security sniffers. China is also launching a Starlink clone for these exact same reasons. LEO birds are hard to get in the beam and stay in it. Musk changing the world yet again.

In WW2 a periscope could be detected by radar as it was briefly raised and the sub sunk because of it.

Now imagine a radio signal being broadcast and being able to be picked up from satellites or ships or land based listening posts. That one ship would have the fleet around it and would put many thousands of lives in danger.
