I suspect that one issue that we are discussing is the synthetic reproduction of otherwise natural remedies. The pharmaceutical companies shy away from plant-based drugs because it is hard to patent the product and there is no 'big' money in drugs that cannot be proprietary.
So the drug companies research ways to synthesize substances that are around us every day (they don't tell you that.) When the necessary essence is reproduced artificially that can be patented BUT often the natural force of the product is lost - with varying results good and bad.
Another consideration is the massive variety of the human organism - much of which is not understood, not even researched. Milk is ranked high for nutrition obviously founded on the need for infantile nourishment, i.e. breast milk. And natural human breast milk contains many obscure substances that are necessary for infantile development and health.
Of course mammary gland milk is synthesized for many reasons but that gives rise to many other problems. Similarly, a small portion of the human race cannot tolerate milk or milk products. No matter what chemical/herbal health therapy humans produce, there are ALWAYS humans that cannot tolerate the product. What a human cannot tolerate is - for them - a 'poison.'
The over-the-counter pain medicine advertised prolifically every day is Relief Factor. The manufacturer claims about 75% effectiveness. People with all sorts of pain maladies from headaches to spinal injuries claim relief, often total relief. But what of the 25% that it doesn't help? They are 'different'; we accept that.
As a person suffering for years with severe spinal injury pains, both cervical and lumbar, I have studied Relief Factor as a possible efficient source of pain relief. I find that it contains a substance related to berberry; berberry causes my bowels much distress. So I have not even tried the product. For me, berberry is a 'poison.'
Any sort of health therapeutic substance is likely to not be universally effective for various reasons. That is part of the dynamics of human frailty. Often we are pressed to seek relief in any form that we can tolerate. The pharmaceutical companies could be accused of taking advantage of that pressing need at times.

Sorry/not sorry for wanting most or all of my medicines derived from plants, in all of the holistic otc meds none have given me any side-effects but I do practice moderation esp. with new stuff - take a half dose see if it helps.
