Trump Has Turned the Democratic Party Into a Pitiless Machine
The New York Times ^ | Aug. 18, 2024, 1:00 a.m. ET | Ezra Klein

“Many of the same politicians who now publicly embrace Trump privately dread him,” Nikki Haley said in February. “They know what a disaster he’s been and will continue to be for our party. They’re just too afraid to say it out loud. Well, I’m not afraid to say the hard truth out loud. I feel no need to kiss the ring.”

Yet there Haley was at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, kissing the ring. “President Trump asked me to speak to this convention in the name of unity,” she said. “I’ll start by making one thing perfectly clear: Donald Trump has my strong endorsement, period.”

Today’s Republican Party is what political scientists call a “personalist” party: It is built around a person, not an agenda or a coalition. The party is co-chaired by Trump’s daughter-in-law, Lara Trump. Dissidents like Liz Cheney and Chris Christie and Adam Kinzinger and even former Vice President Mike Pence have been exiled.

The Democratic Party has proved itself anything but a personalist party. Its convention this week will reflect a historic, collective act: the party’s mobilization to persuade its leader, Joe Biden, to step aside.

How have the two parties come to be such perfect opposites, photo negatives of each other? One reason predates Trump. The other reason is Trump.

There is a contradiction at the heart of the Republican Party that does not exist at the heart of the Democratic Party. Democrats are united in their belief that the government can, and should, act on behalf of the public. To be on the party’s far left is to believe the government should do much more. To be among its moderates is to believe it should do somewhat more...

Such BS tripe.

Today’s Republican party is built on definitive philosophy anchored in America First.

Trump is just our principal agent in this era. There’ll be others that follow him, but the bedrock of this new Republican party is...America First. Not Trump.

Which makes it antithetic to so many traitors in DC.

It’s just as well. The country has moved much further to the left over the years to the point that a traditional 80s-era conservative probably couldn’t get elected.

**********

True statement.

Also, 1980’s conservatives never had sufficient legislative numbers until 1994 to do anything.

It’s pretty easy to be a hardcore conservative when you’re always in the minority.

That is true. But on balance, he says and does enough things with which I agree, I’ll support him. Abortion excepted.

"The modern Republican Party, by contrast, is built upon a loathing of the government. Some of its members want to see the government shrunk and hamstrung."

Unfortunately, that is true mostly during election cycles...
However, excluding the GOP's perfection of the perpetual circle-jerk, they have, generally, accomplished nothing/nada/zip when they are in DC, majority or minority...

Maybe your time would be better spent on the moderator-protected Trump Family Train threads where only glowing worship of Trump is permitted. I hope he beats Kamala but I'm not going to champion him as some rock-ribbed conservative that he's never been and doesn't pretend to be.

AGREED. I simply cannot stand Trump as a human being. He made his glory as a billionaire playboy on the Howard Stern Show. He treats women like Kleenex -- use one, throw it away & presto! Another one just like it pops up in its place.

He cheated on every wife he's ever had with the next one. And with several other women as well. And he treated them all like Kleenex. Each one of those women is somebody's daughter. Somebody's sister. Somebody's best friend. If that man was my next door neighbor for the past 30 years, we would STILL not be friends.

But I also have a degree in political science & another in statistical analysis. I've been fortunate to have employers who let me accumulate my vacation days & take them all at once, every two years. I have worked as a polling analyst for two months (Labor Day to Election Day) every two years, for a GOP congressional campaign, ever since 1978.

And in politics, you usually have to choose the lesser of two evils. In 2016, 2020 & again in 2024, I am being forced to hold my nose & vote for Donald Trump. Because, just like the last two times, the alternative -- eight years of that Democratic Party Deep State piece of shit -- is too terrible to contemplate.

And the Democratic Party Deep State propaganda network, formerly known as "news media," will make Goddamn sure that it's eight years, not four. They actually swapped out Dementia Joe without batting an eye, so this time it'll be 12 years.

They let Bill Clinton get away with treating women like Kleenex. So I'm gonna let Trump get away with it too. The alternative is too terrible to contemplate.

"Persohalist" is the same kind of smear as "populist."

Populism is a political ideology that strives to appeal to ordinary people who feel that their concerns are disregarded by established elite groups.

The opposite of populism is elitism, the political ideology that asserts the governed are not qualified to choose political leaders from among their ranks and that the only legitimate political leaders come from an entitled, hereditary, criminal political class.

Prcisely...Trump is an ideological gut fighter who is about as conservative as the large part of America necessary for election will tolerate, at present. I will vote for him a third time.

However, I am often not willing to listen to his rambling speeches. But no question, he has endured great personal suffering for his efforts on behalf of the country. His sacrifices, in my mind, help offset my reservations concerning his past behavior...including serious questions as to his medical draft deferment and occasional lack of sensitivity as to military service.

And the problem is?

The problem is people want and need a strong government.

Spoken like a born welfare queen.

So people who work for government are morally and intellectually superior to people who don't?

I want a government that is restricted to its constitutionally enumerated powers.

Why is that a problem for you?

I’d say there’s a helluva lot more ‘ring kissing’ going on the Democrat side right now trying to legitimize the Hairy/Balz-2024 ticket than placating President Trump.

The NY Slimes sure has a pretty way of admitting the democrat party has gone full woke commie Marxist and they are not going back to the American way of capitalism that has worked so well for hundreds of years. Meanwhile communism has never worked long-term anywhere.

I suggest all dems who believe this nonsense should take the next plane, train, boat, car, whatever to the communist country of their dreams so the real Americans can live happily ever after without them stinking up the country like little mounds of live bacteria laden poop.

Just as they did with Nazi Germany during WWII, the NYT is going all-out to promote Soviet-style communism to replace our Constitutional Republic (and capitalism).

I don’t remember Clinton wanting the border closed, ramping up deportations, stopping U.S. businesses from going to China, wanting trade policies that benefited the U.S., wanting manufacturing in this country, against involving the U.S. in foreign wars, cutting taxes, building infrastructure, clearing out the swamp and the deep state, cleaning up election fraud, and putting legal American’s interests above anything else.

I have no idea what so called conservatives are looking for in a candidate that Trump is missing.
