Anna Mary Robertson Moses [Sept 7, 1860 - Dec 13, 1961] was born on a farm in Greenwich, New York, and was one of ten children. She had a happy childhood, but was somewhat impoverished. She grew up loving arts, crafts, and also became proficient in needlepoint and quilting. At age 27, she married one of the hired hands and had a family of 10 herself. However, 5 of the children died young. When she developed arthritis in her late 70's, a friend suggested that she try painting instead of stitching. She had her first art exhibition at age 80. Her paintings have been reproduced as Christmas Cards, tiles, and fabrics throughout America and abroad. She is living proof that the human spirit can triumph at any age.

Thanks for posting the link. I don't have time to view it now, but it's now on my official "to view" list.

I really like her paintings. It is an America long gone by, depicting Americans who would be baffled and terrified by the weirdos who roam our country today.

My husband and I (in our late thirties) are considering attempting Bob and Steve Ross’ style of painting. I have an artistic streak, but he doesn’t so much. Still, if bored haus fraus can pick it up, so can he.

Her painting always reminds me somewhat of the English painter L. S. Lowry, though he dealt more in city scenes:

Mom and dad had that very snow scene painting in their bedroom. It was given to mom by an old lady she used to help out. I often wondered if it was the original.

Ping, mairdie. You love the classicists, but you may enjoy this film about a primitive artist.

Grandma Moses would often paint similar versions of the same painting, for friends and people who wanted one. See if it’s signed “Moses”!
