In my travels I have used the namaste bow and clasped hands. I have used the polite bow in China, Japan, and Thailand while on business , on THEIR soil. I’ve had Indian coworkers, and even drivers who made a mistake on the road, make that gesture to me out of simple respect. I guess some Americans might do it in return, if they are familiar with the culture.

But I notice that Walz does that WEIRD thing of putting his hand over his heart, as if he’s pledging the flag; and Harris is doing it too.

It’s all just an act, just as pretending they see someone they recognize in the crowd and pointing at them is.

Many of my friends make this gesture. In Japanese Zen it expresses both respect and gratitude.

I've been involved with Zen for 40+ years and have a number of Buddhist friends. After all this time the gesture is natural to me.
