I started a thread like this a couple of years ago when I bought a new computer and transferred all my music files to it. I didn't stick with it, but maybe this time I'll be more dedicated!
One of the things that caught my eye was the "Play Count" number for each of the MP3 and MP4 files I moved from one computer to the other. As I went through these tracks on iTunes, I decided to rank them in the order of their play frequency to see if there were any interesting patterns in the number of times I've played them over the years. I'll take the Top 50 songs on this list and present them here on a series of FR threads. I'll post them here on a new thread that compiles the growing list one day at a time over the next couple of months. I'll only post them on weekdays and may miss a day or two here and there, so it will take at least ten weeks to do this.
And to show my gratitude to the FR management for giving us all a forum to post vanity threads like this, I'll be following up this first post by making a contribution for the current quarterly fundraiser. I would encourage everyone on these threads to do the same! :-)
Have fun with this, folks!
First thing I noticed today is that there was a tie at the end of the list for #50, so there will actually be 51 songs on 51 threads here.
#50T -- "Solsbury Hill" by Peter Gabriel ... Click Here (Rumble version)
Just pinging some FR music regulars here. :-)
Can’t really go wrong with Peter Gabriel
The song's got some interesting features. I read somewhere that the main drum beat is actually played on a phone book instead of a real drum. LOL.
Took my young daughter to an outdoor concert in the Chicago area years ago to see Pater Gabriel. It was like a pot
forest fire
#1 on my playlist is a song the kids in children's church at my old church used to beg for years ago. I didn't lead children's church every Sunday because I rotated with two other adults. But every time I was there they'd "talk me into" playing the song if they could quote that month's Bible verse.
I got tired of the song. And I wound up parting ways with that church when I learned that my donation money was going to abortion and gay lobbyists (United Methodist) and there was no way to talk them out of it.
That changed when I learned a year and a half ago that the young adults (the ones I remember as kids) were the main voice in that Methodist church breaking away from the hedonist UMC conference and joining the more Bible based new conference. I couldn't be prouder! And I'm glad I have that song digitally or I would have worn it slap out as either vinyl or tape with as much as I've played it since then. LOL
Well I don't care
what some may say
gonna stand up for the Lord today.
Well I don't care
if they all known
gonna let the Lord's redeemed say so.
Gonna say it loud.
Gonna say it proud.
I...I love the Lord!
Interesting activity. My plays depend entirely on my mood. If I’m driving, I want upbeat extremely energetic stuff, like “Highway Star” or “Speed King” or “Welcome to the Pleasuredome.” If I’m just toodling around and want peace, I put on Dave Brubeck Quartet. If I want spiritual uplift, Michael W. Smith or the “WOW Christian Greatest Hits of 2003.”
And if I’m feeling suicidal, Depeche MOde.
LOL. That’s a great description.
One of the reasons I got into this task was that I was trying to see if the songs I've played the most frequently over the last 15+ years are actually the ones I like the most. There's a close correlation, but it's not a perfect one.
Exactly. Maybe the play frequencies on your playlist will tell you how much time you’ve spent in each mood/condition over the years!
The song I posted, of course, has a direct correlation between the lyrics and the activity ("stand up for the Lord" being implemented by the "kids" who chose to do exactly that when they were grown).
I could guess.
One thing I know: in the late 60s we were trying to install headers on my 69 Camaro (”Installs in 30 minutes”). Well, not with power steering it didn’t. We worked ALL NIGHT, and my friend had an 8-track with only 2 tapes, Creedence Clearwater and Blood, Sweat, & Tears. To this date, I can barely stand to hear those songs. They played over and over for almost 6 straight hours.
Thanks for including me in this. Lately I have had a mind to post a rant r.e. Apple Music. First world problem but . . .
1.) Over 5,000 songs in my library, but shuffle seems unable to get past a few hundred at best.
2.) The app stops arbitrarily.
3.) Apple tries to pass off covers as if they are originals.
4.) The app arbitrarily goes out of shuffle mode.
Those off the top of my head.
Still, to be able to shuffle songs is a luxury I did not have growing up.
I can't really speak to it because I don't use Apple Music. I have one of the early iPods that still works in the USB port of vehicles up to around the 2020 model year.
Just a couple of thoughts on the shuffle issue ...
1. Can you check on a few random songs to see if the have a "Skip When Shuffling" setting on them?
2. Does your Apple Music app have some kind of setting that plays some songs more frequently based on a rating or some other criteria you may have mistakenly set for them?
Totally unrelated ... This might be one of the funniest TV ads I've ever seen:
The brothas in the alley breakdancing to Charlie Daniels Band at the end is awesome. LMAO.
That whole album is fantastic. Moribund The Burgermeister is probably the most Genesis-like song Gabriel did during his solo career.
I have about 45,000 tracks in my Apple Music library and have several crates of CDs and cassettes from the 70s and beyond that still need conversion to MP4. That's a retirement task but will look forward to exporing those cassettes as I used to do a lot of taping off the radio in those days. For example, the week that John Lennon was shot in 1980, I taped almost 100 hours of Beatles tributes that aired on Boston radio during that period. Also a lot of Christmas shows from that period. Looking forward to exploring some of those at some later time.
I've been contemplating making the switch to Spotify as Apple Music has a lot of drawbacks in my opinion, but I'm so locked into the Apple world that it might not be worth the effort. I'm just hoping that Apple Music overcomes those deficiencies over time .
For example, the play count does not transfer correctly from my other devices. It drives me crazy. I could listen to a new album on my iPhone several times before the play count starts showing up on Apple Music, if at all. If I play music from my home computer, the play count works perfectly but just does not capture all my plays from external devices.
I just listened to that song again. It’s been years since I heard it!
Day #2 will be posted in a few hours at lunch time!
Also has the best version of “Here Comes The Flood.”
For example, I have every Bob Dylan song ever recorded - either studio or live in concert - as well as hundreds of Dylan songs covered by other artists. You can see how that might add up when I throw in other prolific artists in which I collect everything they put out, such as Neil Young, Elvis Costello, and Pink Floyd.
The $10/mo Apple Music rental fee makes it possible for me to download away.
You can see how that might quickly add up, trackwise. You can see the kind of rabbit holes I go down.
