Roman Ring Recovered in Northern Israel

According to a Live Science report, a 13-year-old hiker discovered a greenish ring estimated to be about 1,800 years old at Khirbet Shalala, an archaeological site in northern Israel. "It was corroded, and at first, I thought it was just a rusty bolt," said teen Yair Whiteson. The boy's family then got in touch with the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA). Eitan Klein of the IAA said that the ring is thought to be made of bronze and is engraved with an image of Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom, war, and military strategy. She is shown wearing a helmet and holding a sword and spear. The ring was likely worn during the second or third century A.D. by a woman or girl who may have lived in the area, Klein explained. It could also have been lost by someone who worked in the local quarry, or been a burial offering in a nearby grave, he added.

Found by a 13 YO boy. No wasting time with this young man.

the [greenish] ring is thought to be made of bronze and is engraved with an image of Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom, war, and military strategy.

A few seconds before popping in here and seeing this article, I was at Proverbs 3, specifically in the place of the identity of this woman:

Proverbs 3:13-19

13 Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.
14 For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold.
15 She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her.
16 Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour.
17 Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.
18 She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.
19 The LORD by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens.

A greenish ring. Okay, that would match the complexion of the *Esoter*ic woman in my study, whose name means "I will be hidden."

Minerva:

"She is also a goddess of warfare, though with a focus on strategic warfare.." (wiki)

It really is a decoder ring.

Old rock, eh?

When I was a boy I found a fossil of a scallop shell.

A curved stone with the unmistakable pattern of ridges on it - like a scallop.

I found it in the forest of the New Jersey pine barrens - which eons ago was
covered by the Atlantic Ocean.

During the two years we lived in Israel, we went to so many sites where ongoing excavations were located. We camped in a town across Galilea after crossing thru a mine field. This old town was the north most land facing Syria from 47 to 67. It was shelled every day. The IDF would send folks up at night to man the trenchlines and by day the Syrians would shell them. I pocketed a handful of little square cut stones that might have been part of a bath, walls, or other ancient grout work. The coolest thing was the white marbel two sided cross - it was a flat stone with two different types of cross on either side. It had a burlap bag drapped over it. Another cool thing was the 9 columns, which were both red stone and white stone, which came from two different regions of the old world, some were from over a 1000 miles away. Being behind a minefield across from the populated side of the big lake (sea) means this site only has visitors several weeks a year.

The way they work these sites is to send in college groups once or twice a year for a week or two. In this way, the tourist side of the equation for research will go on forever;)

We also found some old oil lamps, little clay ones. These were usually used for worship or a ceremony and left behind. There was a field that had thousands of them. Many of us took a couple of these as well.

If you go to Herrods Summer Palace along the coast north of Tel Aviv, there is an old garbage dump that is 15 feet high and they tell everyone on tours to pull something out of the side of it for souvenirs.

There is one place where the thorne bushes grow that they put on Jesus and we went that place and cut about a dozen limbs of this stuff and made them to give to various churches.

Yeah, around here we’ve got bupkis. A few years back a guy and his stepson asked to metal detect around the yard, and I let them and followed them around to point out where the farm bldgs used to be and to ask questions. They wound up with a rusty I guess old fastener of some kind and a piece of barbed wire. They replaced their divets and took off.

As a rule, it’s not a bad idea to wear protective eyewear at a dig site if there’s artillery. :^) Anyway, sounds fun!
