The first swimming training session for triathletes in Paris has been cancelled due to levels of water pollution in the Seine.
Triathletes were set to take to the river this morning for a familiarisation session but World Triathlon and the organisation responsible for carrying out water quality tests deemed the standard had dipped below acceptable levels.
The Seine was declared clean enough for swimming after inspections in July but heavy rain in the French capital over the past 48 hours diminished the quality.
However, organisers are hopeful there will be no further delays.
A statement from Paris 2024 and World Triathlon read: 'The tests carried out in the Seine revealed water quality levels that in the view of the international federation, World Triathlon, did not provide sufficient guarantees to allow the event to be held.
'This is due to rain that has fallen on Paris on 26 and 27 July.
'Given the weather forecast for the next 48 hours, Paris 2024 and World Triathlon are confident that water quality will return to below limits before the start for of the triathlon competitions (scheduled for 30 July).'
Water quality can be affected by weather and levels of E. coli, a faecal bacteria. Tests are carried out in the Seine daily with the latest taking place on Saturday.
The men's triathlon is scheduled on Tuesday morning and the weather is expected to improve. The running and bike familiarisations proceeded as planned.
Despite the concerns over the water pollution, the women's individual event is to go ahead on Wednesday with the mixed relay event held the following week.

How is that Satanic Games working out for you Globalists?
I hope they continue to have problems. Shame on them for that disgusting drag show crap. Hope they have the worst Olympics ever.
I believe Mitch Rapp survived being in that river in the novel, American Assassin.
That’s a shame.
The television coverage has been terrible. Too many interviews and too much women’s sports.
So. Paris must have plugged up all the sewer line drains into the river hoping that’d be enough, but the rain caused all the street dumping and pi$$ing to wash down into the river anyway.
I’m wondering here. Never been to Paris but I’ve been places where sewer rivers smell horrible. Did city/Olympic officials deploy scent misters to cover up the smell anywhere?
Eeew!
I saw where rain had delayed cycling events.
What a sham, er, I mean shame.
Cologne was invented in Germany, as a defense against the French...
:0)
3rd world immigrants crapping, peeing and discarding other waste right into the river, basically.
Toward the end of one successful military campaign, Napoleon sent an excited message to Josephine. He wrote: “Home in three days. Don’t bathe.”
Very French...
God will not be mocked
Don’t you just love it! A huge center of environmental wacko-ism has a river too full of poop to swim in. And they want to ban beef and force us to eat bugs!
So the standard is 6 out of 7 days of “acceptable” Fecal Coliform count? Which includes dermatologic active other bacteria and viruses... penetrating skin (and inhaled into a swimmer’s lungs/trachea?
No freaking way. The RAIN caused a RISE in the counts== that is to say the RAIN washed street FECAL matter into the Seine. The Seine does not have a fine enough sein to filter that out. And no where near enough chlorine to clean it out.
Truly a ridiculous notion. They should change the swimming venue to somewhere else close by the other two events of the triathlon. But No- they won’t. The snail eaters want to make international potential champions— sick and possibly dead.
There is an activist group who are protesting by pooping in the tributaries and the Seine itself upstream of Paris, intentionally polluting the water. It’s insane!
