A study reveals that bowel movement frequency significantly influences physiology and long-term health, with the best outcomes linked with passing stools once or twice a day.
Previous research has suggested associations between constipation and diarrhea with higher risks of infections and neurodegenerative conditions, respectively.
Gibbons and his team collected clinical, lifestyle, and biological data—including blood chemistry, gut microbiome, genetics and more—from over 1,400 healthy adult volunteers with no signs of active disease.
When stools linger too long in the gut, microbes exhaust the available fiber—which they ferment into beneficial short-chain fatty acids—and instead ferment proteins, producing toxins like p-cresol sulfate and indoxyl sulfate.
"What we found is that even in healthy people who are constipated, there is a rise in these toxins in the bloodstream," said Gibbons, noting that these toxins are particularly burdensome to the kidneys.
In cases of diarrhea, the team found clinical chemistries indicative of inflammation and liver damage. Gibbons explained that during diarrhea, the body excretes excessive bile acid, which the liver would otherwise recycle to dissolve and absorb dietary fats.
Fiber-fermenting gut bacteria known as "strict anaerobes," associated with good health thrived in the "Goldilocks zone" of one or two poops a day.
"It was eating more fruit and vegetables, that was the biggest signal we saw," said Gibbons, along with drinking plenty of water, regular physical activity, and eating a more plant-dominant diet.

Um, how does a man not sit to s...?
********
You squat just like you do in the woods, out camping, etc.
OK, why?
Two is good.
Six is better,right?
I must have a awesome gut(not).
L. reuteri yogurt is a miracle worker ... not just in the gut, either.
OK, why?

To keep it from getting on your legs and butt.
A bowl (or two) of Raisin Bran for breakfast and 2 or 3 cups of coffee - no problems…
Two tablespoons of mineral oil every night before bed. Old school but works! Harmlessly lubes the digestive tract to great effect!😀
You suggest doing it “dog style?”
I suspect most do better with almost no fiber. There is a reason our bodies reject fiber...and yeah, a no fiber diet is still a “regular” diet, so to speak.
There is that. 😆
I went to the Proctologist with a Hemorrhoid problem, he said take 2 teaspoons of Meta Mucil twice a day. Wow, I am now a convert, it really helps, I recommend you get a some and try for a week, you’ll be amazed at the results.
Why does anyone NEED fiber? BTW, cholesterol is generally GOOD for you. The sweet spot for all cause mortality seems to be 190-260, NOT "below 200"!

As one gets older:
LOW cholesterol is bad stuff!
If stopped up, it makes more sense to LUBE THE TUBE than to add more water-absorbing fiber. One can use MCT oil or just let a pat of butter dissolve in the mouth. Two if really clogged. Speaking from when I took fiber supplements “because it is good for you”. Now? I just don’t get clogged up on a high meat, no fruit or veggie diet.
I don’t give two craps. But I do give one crap.
Kefir Kefir Kefir. 1/2 a glass daily does it for me. Poop should be light colored, well shaped, and float. Enough said about that.
Human bodies don’t reject fiber, they just don’t digest that which is not digestable
Good article. Had we known this was a signal:
“In cases of diarrhea, the team found clinical chemistries indicative of inflammation and liver damage. Gibbons explained that during diarrhea, the body excretes excessive bile acid, which the liver would otherwise recycle to dissolve and absorb dietary fats”
My mother, who died due to pancreatic cancer, had thought she was suffering from IBS - Irritable Bowel Syndrome. When diagnosed, she only lived another 27 days.
In boot camp the chief cook came and gave the newly arrived boots a lecture, the summary of that lecture is one that I have never forgotten...
“There are two kinds of food, food that makes a turd, and food that pushes a turd”
