VANIY:I fell for a craigslist scam so you wouldn't have to
craigslist.org ^ | July 21, 2024 | E. Pluribus Unum

We just bought a new used car for my wife off of craigslist. Now I am selling her old car on craigslist. Within minutes of posting the ad I got a response. The people were "very interested" but wanted a report on the car from some website. I paid $22.95 for the report and sent it to them. Never heard from them again.

Today I got another guy who was "very interested" in the car, but wanted me to get a report from some website for $27.

Fool me once, your fault. Fool me twice, my fault.

Thank you for the warning, that is a tricky one.

Most police departments are happy to witness sales in their parking lot.

Tell them if they’re interested, they need to research it for themselves.

I have not sold a car in years. There is a learning curve. I learned it. I just block them.

Hope you sell your car. I don’t use facebook, my brother has luck with facebook marketplace when buying and selling.

Which url’s did they request a check from? I would check out whois.domaintools.com or similar and research to see if the urls they sent you to have been in business for a while and where the IP’s are served from.

I bought our last three vehicles off craigslist and still have all three of them years later. They have all been good vehicles. I’d keep this one except that we don’t have room to park four cars without parking one on the street.

I do not intend to purchase any more “reports,” so the point is moot.

Give it away. Let it help a worthy cause of your choosing. I have given a few away.

I am VERY INTERESTED in your car but first I need a report from this website www.scamsrus.net. For only 22.95 they’ll check you out for me. Thanks in advance.

I’m not quite sure what the scam is here. Are they sending you to a fake car report website that they actually own?

I got one of those. It was $1...and I got the report...except there was like $25 on my next bill...My bank flagged it...and they took care of it. And lo and behold...I get another $25...and off to the bank again. The bank killed that account and never happened again.

I recently sold a car on autotrader.com.

The first (very quick) 5 ‘interested’ parties, all asked the same 6 questions, in the same order, and all wanted me to contact them at “(some name) at g m a i l . c o m”. Spaced out like that - it was obviously people wanting to circumvent the autotrader process. They warn you about this. It was clearly shady.

I responded through the system that I would only do things through the (autotrader) system. Never heard back.

Even the guy that I eventually sold to, said he was in Scotland and was using his USA in-laws address because it was the only way to create an account. He didn’t want to test drive the car and asked if I could deliver to an address an hour away from me. Just very strange...but turned out to be legit, all went fine but I insisted on doing things as the autotrader system defined.

It’s a scam.

https://consumer.ftc.gov/consumer-alerts/2018/10/steering-clear-vehicle-history-report-scams

This can be a ruse to get the seller’s CC info and personal details. Worst case it can lead to identity theft.

You might want to keep an eye on your CC account and check your credit reports on a regular basis.

https://www.snopes.com/articles/436483/vehicle-history-report-scam/ (Yeah, I know, but it’s the easiest way to explain it — https://consumer.ftc.gov/consumer-alerts/2018/10/steering-clear-vehicle-history-report-scams has details, too). This scam’s been around for a while, but basically the site is owned by the buyer and he steers folks to the site for the $25 or so verification fee. Best case. Worst case: he takes the info and sells it. One of my neighbors got taken by it. Lost $500 or so as I recall with the identity theft angle.
