Bud Light's popularity continues to decline more than a year after a boycott disrupted the US beer industry.
A backlash that began last April - after the beer giant used a transgender influencer in an advert - has snowballed, new sales figures show.
Back then, Bud Light was the undisputed top-selling beer in American stores by a margin. It had held the place for decades.
It fell below Modelo Especial last summer - and now it has slipped to No3 behind Michelob Ultra. Coors Light could overtake Bud Light by the end of the year if the fall in sales - shown in the graph below - continues.
Even a surprise endorsement from Donald Trump in February - and ads featuring NFL legend Peyton Manning and rapper Post Malone - have not slowed the sales decline.
Bud Light’s market share has slipped so far that, in the four weeks ending July 6, its sales made up just 6.5 percent of beer sold in stores in dollar terms.
That is a sharp fall on more than ten percent before the boycott.
Meanwhile, Modelo accounted for 9.7 percent of sales and Michelob 7.3 percent over the four weeks , according to NielsenIQ data analyzed by consulting firm Bump Williams.
The four-week stretch between Memorial Day and July Fourth weekend is essential for brewers' sale.
Modelo, a Mexican import sold by Constellation Brands, has outpaced Bud Light in dollar sales since last year. It has now also surpassed Bud Light in sales volume.

The senior executives have still not been fired.
Everyone—including the entire European Board of Directors—needs to go before we declare victory.
Is that overkill?
You bethcha.
We need to send a message—don’t try to push your perversions on us.
We can’t stop everybody—so we need to make an example of somebody.
Yeungling? Fuk that Sh-—!! Pabst Blue Ribbon!!
Great, don’t cram wokism down our throats…👏👊👊👊
Unfortunately, Yuengling does not distribute their products nationally.
For example, I can not buy it here in NH.
I have to drive down into MA to buy it. I bought a case when I went to Cape Cod last fall.
It is my favorite domestic beer.
My other two favorite is brewed in Monterey, MX.
Dos Equis Amber
At $9.99 they are cheaper than Tecate.
OOH Chi Wa Wa
They had the Clydesdale's there until about 7-8 years ago. When InBev bought them they got rid of the horses here.
One of the commercials with the horses running around in the snow was filmed about a miles from my first house.
You know, Anheuser-Busch is a conservative company, and always has been. What they are showcasing in the free-fall of one of their premier brands, is the damage that can result from the hiring of a single DEI incompetent such as their DEI-executive Alissa Heinerscheid.
Alissa you’re gone but not forgotten!
Not good enough!
Only when it places between "Rawlings" baseball glove oil and "Terro" liquid ant bait will I be satisfied.
Regards,
Negra Modelo is my choice dark lager...
OK losing to Modelo isn’t a bad thing, it’s a good beer. Losing to Michelob... Unfortunately that also means Americans’ taste in beer really hasn’t improved.
Hubby agrees!!
This beer sucked even before they were running trannies for spokesmen and insulting their customer base.
So you can imagine my ease in continuing to boycott after they did the aforementioned.
I never drank that pi$$ long before BL pulled that stupid tranny crap. It’s hard to find a beer that isn’t better.
Or that Americans figured out locally-made craft brews are way better.
Men and women don’t want to be like a “Trans Man” version of “Audrey Hepburn.”
What a disgusting image and man to be associated with in ads.
Americans like watery beer. May as well get used to it. It ain’t changing any time soon.
