Awoman who refused to pay a 20 percent tip on her Subway order has been applauded for challenging a practice some online feel has got "way out of hand."
Tipping might be a common practice in America today but, in truth, there are occasions when some are reluctant to do so.
A survey of 2,000 U.S. adults conducted by Talker Research found respondents reluctantly tip $37.80 a month due to the pressure or awkwardness of the situation.
All those tips add up too, with that monthly figure equating to $453.60 a year in guilt-induced gratuity. All told, 26 percent of respondents said they felt they are always or often forced to tip more than they would like.

I think tipping should be an indicator of the service you received. If you serve yourself and buss your own food, no tip required. If you are seated and served by a friendly and helpful server, tip what you feel is appropriate.
However, I also use the tip to indicate bad service or rude servers. I never leave zero tip in such cases, but rather tip $0.03 so they know I didn’t forget, but to tell them they need to improve their serving skill set.
Like the banks , they’ve gone insane with fees
“”””””We had a customer in our bar in Seattle that drank beer and never tipped. One day he said, “hey why does this other guy always get a frosted mug every time he orders another beer and you put refill mine in the same glass?” The barkeep said, “ no tip, warm glass. Tip, frosty glass.” He started tipping after that.””””””
I would sure fire that bartender if he was working my customers like that.
“in college worked as a server for $2.17 an hour we lived on our tips!!”
And if you were an excellent waitress (I was a waitress, not a “server” - LOL!) and cute you could score big time.
have you seen the tip menu now?!
20% good service
25% great service
30% exceptional service
Custom
This is for counter service and a teenager with attitude.
I’m %15 lunch, %20 dinner table service only.
There is no tipping in China and they execute their criminals swiftly in sand pits around city centers. Just an interesting data point.
If, upon being hired, the boss instructed the employees to "just take one of the mugs right off the rack - it otherwise takes too long to actually chill it," then the bartender is just following orders.
If the boss told them, "always put a couple dozen beer mugs in the fridge, so they get nice and cold - our customers love that," then the bartender would be violating orders, and should be admonished.
Regards,
No frosty mug, off to different bar.
The whole idea of expecting tips when the order is placed at the counter is absurd. Unfortunately, the staff then knows who has declined to tip before they even begin to prepare that customer’s food. I don’t go to places that do that.
Me too.
Otherwise its simply a bribe not to mess with your food.
I tip not because I feel guilty. I tip because I would appreciate it if the roles were flipped. In return I get treated like family (sometimes better) in places I regular
On top of that, I applaud people that are actually doing good work for the meager pays in this dystopian economy. I don’t know how they even survive and try to support them as much as I can
When Lou Malnati's frist came to my area, I went and gave it a try. Ordered their "largest" pizza which was about 10" in diameter. Anyhow, no toppings, just cheese for pick up. IIRC it was somewhere north of $30, then tax. I went to pay and she flipped the screen around with the pre-set tips amounts of like 20-40-60 percent.
What? Exactly how much should I be shelling out for a cheese pizza? And this was BEFORE inflation was kicked into high gear. Didn't live up to the hype, never had a desire to go back, that didn't help.
Of course, if the boss instructed that customers have to pay extra for a frosted mug or to rub the lime slice around the rim for a drink or to add an olive to a martini, or to smile and be friendly, then that would be a stupid but official boss practice if he wanted to drive away customers who paid for his products and made his business possible but that didn’t slip extra cash to his employees.
I wouldn’t want my waitresses and help to pick and choose among my customers and drive off the ones who were just buying what I make and sell.
It’s insane they want tips for fast food service. Or to fill a coffee cup. Most of this started thanks to Karens relieving their guilt during covid by throwing a couple bucks at the poor souls forced to go to work with the public everyday while the Karens hid out at home in intense fear of catching covid. But they still had to get their latte’s and fast food so they started tipping the “non-essential” workers that were so far beneath them.
I tip only for table service, and the tip I leave is based on the service I get. I have had such bad service that I left no tip. Live and learn.
“It brightens people day”
It would brighten my day too.
I’ll have to set up a go-fund-me. Government work ain’t easy... you know the kind of people I have to put up with every day?
I tip 18-20% for exceptional service (rare), 15% for good, and less than that and down to nothing for bad service.
It's getting insane how far tipping is expanding outside the normal areas. I was ordering a custom gaming PC for my son's birthday online, get to the checkout screen and there is an option to "tip your PC builder" suggesting 20% on a freaking $2,000 order. Now I'm worried if I tip nothing, they'll screw something up on purpose. Finally, out of frustration and annoyance, I cancel the order and go with a different company with no such option. Utterly ridiculous!
We solved the tipping problem this way...
We don’t eat out anymore.
Yeah, I tip the bums on the corner too. For exactly that reason. If our roles were reversed I would want someone to help me feed my poor dog.
I’d want someone to have a heart and help me up when I was down. Even if I was driving an RV from town to town and I was planning to be down pretty much forever. As long as people with a heart would continue to help me out.
People just don’t understand. Cigarettes don’t buy themselves you know.
And when people help me out I always wave and give them a thumbs up when they drive by. Just go the extra mile for someone that cares, you know?
This economy is bad, have you priced weed lately? Without people with a big heart, how could a poor man survive these days?
It’s the golden rule, you know. Bless your heart. That guy Sarcazmo just drives by and flips me off. I don’t wave to him.
The one that gets me is the tip screen at the local brewery. If the person behind the bar gives my woman samples and helps her pick out a good beer for her, i tend to tip. Am i doing this right? If I go and order and all they do is pour my beer and give it to me at the counter I do not tip. My local pizza place asks for tips when i go up and order at the register. NO TIP. Drive thru coffee, NO TIP. Sit down restaurants i tip if my order is taken and then the tip depends on how good the service is.
