Woman Refusing To Pay 20% Tip for a Sandwich Applauded: 'Out of Hand'
Newsweek ^ | 06/11/2024 | Jack Beresford

Awoman who refused to pay a 20 percent tip on her Subway order has been applauded for challenging a practice some online feel has got "way out of hand."

Tipping might be a common practice in America today but, in truth, there are occasions when some are reluctant to do so.

A survey of 2,000 U.S. adults conducted by Talker Research found respondents reluctantly tip $37.80 a month due to the pressure or awkwardness of the situation.

All those tips add up too, with that monthly figure equating to $453.60 a year in guilt-induced gratuity. All told, 26 percent of respondents said they felt they are always or often forced to tip more than they would like.

Someone has to serve me to get a tip. Not at the counter when I'm buying food. I have no guilt pushing no on the debit card pad.

No tip for counter service, and especially no tip if I’m picking up a take-out order.

Ask your boss to pay you, I just came in to buy a sandwich from him.

For the price of a Subway sandwich, you can buy your own ingredients and make your own sub and have food leftover for later. BTW, I love tipping. It brightens people day and you get better service next time.

I haven’t been to a Subway in ages, but I don’t ever remember them asking for tips or having a tip jar.

But it seems like every place is asking for tips now- even fast food joints.

My first part time job as a teenager was at KFC. We were prohibited from taking tips and were instructed to politely refuse on the rare occasion they were offered.

Now that the $5 footling is $10-$12 dollars, I assume that covers paying workers.

If you have to stand to place your order, you don’t owe anybody a tip.

We American tourists have ruined Europe, too.
I read that many establishments now add a gratuity to the bill.

I’m thinking that making your sandwich shop/deli, coffee shop, etc. ‘tip free’ would be a significant draw.

This stuff is everywhere now. “Would you like to ‘round up’ for cancer research?” etc. If you want to donate to cancer research etc. you can do it on your own.

Eh, I did time in food service. It’s crap work that pays worse. I’ll through a couple bucks. It’s just not that big a deal.

Service chg = 10%
Tip = 12%
22% for getting your own drink. B.S.

Waitresses and such must earn their tips. If you don’t earn it, stiffing is socially acceptable and translates to look for another line of work. We had a customer in our bar in Seattle that drank beer and never tipped. One day he said, “hey why does this other guy always get a frosted mug every time he orders another beer and you put refill mine in the same glass?” The barkeep said, “ no tip, warm glass. Tip, frosty glass.” He started tipping after that.

Tips are for sit down restaurants where the servers wait on you. I am not tipping for a pick up or counter order.

I encountered an automatic “round-up” recently. The change was rounded to the next dollar. I had to ask to get my exact change.

Few recognize that the old 10% tip has already grown with inflation in the price of the meal. The same thing can be said for sales taxes increasing from 3% of cost to 10%. A tip is supposed to be recognition for a job well done, not an automatic service fee. 20%? That is probably more than the owners are making in a lot of cases. No, I usually hit between 10 and 15 but only for table service. For counter service? Who are you tipping? The teller? What about the cooks who really do the work who never see a customer? Yeah, out of hand. Like most things these days.

Lately I’ve noticed when paying with a card a lot of places have 20% tip defaulted right into the device software when doing the transaction......YOU have to change the tip amount to less or zero....if you miss it, it charges you automatically.

That just makes me not want to tip anything.

My rule of thumb is, if a server isn’t taking care of me at a table chances are a tip ain’t in the equation.

I recently took my car through a mechanical car wash. In line I encountered a screen asking when level of car wash I wanted. I picked the middle one. Then a tip screen popped up, with amounts from one to ten dollars. I just ignored it.
