Starting beans from seed
07/12/2024 | me

I've never had this problem before, been growing all sorts of veggies for many years, but this year has been a problem. For one I had very little success growing beans of all things, usually one of the easiest. So I planted a whole packet of seeds (Blue Lake pole) and I have about 6 plants. I tried another pack and soaked them overnight, which I've only done a few times before. Not only hardly any sprouted, but the ones that did are not pole beans, they are bush beans. Both packages were miss labeled. Also, a pack of zucchini seeds turned out to be yellow summer squash. Anyone else having these problems?

Not to that degree. The source of your seeds?

Get some verified Kentucky Wonder. High sprout rate and the output of the pole/vines is phenomenal (long growing, at least in Kentucky, NC, VA, and SC anyway).

fwiw. good luck.

Are they Walmart seeds?

I enjoy some of the gardening videos on YouTube, and I’ve noticed in the comments that many experienced gardeners are having problems with germination, and they mention beans in particular. As for getting the wrong seeds, I’ve had similar problems when ordering from seed vendors on Etsy. I think some of them are simply reselling cheap and outdated seeds they get from bulk seed dealers, many of them in China. You’ll notice that all those five-star ratings on Etsy are from folks who’re simply rating the speedy delivery of the seeds and not their germination rates and the resulting plants.

Bad seed. Get some fresh ones.

I’m betting the seeds were old, not packed for this years planting.

Sounds as if you suspect you got some high tech engineered seeds that are past their “sprout by” date?

I always use inoculant when I start beans. It’ll give you better germination and growth if the beans are halfway good.

Oh sure, all farmers soak their seeds overnight before running them through the seed drill the next day.

As for things growing other than what the package says, straight out of the movie Secondhand Lions…everything came up as corn.

Nope.

I grow Kentucky Wonders and they are going like a house on fire.

My yard long beans did not do so well this year, I might get a few to freeze for stir-fry. But the KW's are so prolific that I am looking up canned bean recipes

I thought I was the only one!

Pole AND bush beans were affected. Low germination rate and the plants were not hardy, either.

Edamame and peppers in the adjacent rows did great.

I think the bush beans were Provider. I forget the variety of pole beans I planted.

I used inoculant on my edamame. Actually, I tried it both ways and the inoculated seed did noticeably better (although both inoculated and uninoculated germinated and yielded OK).

I did not realize that green beans benefitted from inoculant. Thanks for the tip, I’ll try it!

I do the bush beans 274...and plant a couple crops. They went nuts.

One year I started them between wet paper towels. That gave them a head start. That was fun...good for kids.

What did you grow in that spot before.

Walmart carries regular brands. No problem with their seeds.

Bad seed. I had issues with peas and lettuce this year and they were packed for 2024. Only Two pea plants came up out of 4 packages. Sowed several packages of leaf lettuce and hardly any came up. This was back in April/May. Conditions were perfect.

That is bed number 8 so tomatoes and other nightshade plants.

Next year I will plant cucumbers and other melon types there.
