Thousands of protestors marched through central Barcelona this evening, waving placards and squirting holidaymakers with water guns in the latest expression of anger at perceived overtourism in Spain.
Under the slogan 'Enough! Let's put limits on tourism', some 2,800 people - according to police - marched along a waterfront district of Barcelona to demand a new economic model that would reduce the millions of tourists that visit every year.
Protesters carried signs reading 'Barcelona is not for sale,' and, 'Tourists go home,' before some used water guns on tourists eating outdoors at restaurants in popular tourist hotspots. Chants of 'Tourists out of our neighbourhood' rang out as some stopped in front of the entrances to hotels.

If the tourists went home the locals would starve to death.
Active on a thread about a UK Daily Mail article re: tourism in Barcelona. And so willing to know others "backwards and forwards."
So time to review:
One recalls that buwaya wrote to bimboeruption: "I am so conservative that I support the restoration of the Spanish empire under the Bourbon monarchy, and my guides in political philosophy are Thomas Aquinas and De Maistre. There is not an American conservative who supports any monarch, and most certainly not some Spaniard to rule. Or as one read:You extremist republican liberals that call themselves 'conservatives' are funny. You have never understood what you are, much less why you are what you are.
And yet, and yet ...
We actual, genuine conservatives in the great old European tradition see an assertion that we dispute as a challenge to argument, an 'en garde', to a civilized crossing of blades. As did, note, Thomas Aquinas, as his 'Summa' is really a guide to arguments.
Throwing garbage is not defending your position. It is boorish and disorderly behavior best suppressed by the monarch."
"Felipe VI is my king, a Borbon (Bourbon). The Bourbons have held the throne of Spain (with interludes) since 1713. Since they became the only reigning Bourbons after the fall of the French and Neapolitan branches, they are, arguably, the senior branch." 72 posted on 3/7/2024, 12:21:10 PM by buwayaSuch is the Freeper lecturing others whom he claims to know "backwards and forwards," and whom he deems to have "no redeeming features."
I highly agree. Airfare and hotel rooms are cheaper and no crowds.
And... what is your problem with all this? I am commenting about an article concerning my own country, about a city with which I am intimately familiar.
The disregulated character seems to have confused it all with his own pet apocalypse.
And you, btw, also lack redeeming features.
I’ve never been to Spain, closest was southern France. I spent 5 weeks in ‘72 and another 5 weeks in ‘76. Traveled all over, and a bit into northern Italy, in the Alps. A beautiful trip is along the Chateau de Loire and especially Chenonceau castle. and Chambord. The gardens at Chenonceau are just beautiful.
Sadly, never been. I have been invited, often, to the region of Provence, Aix-en-Provence to be specific, by some friends of ours. I gather that its also rather besieged these days.
The Loire is another trip, for sure.
I was born in Norfolk, VA, raised in a military family, and served there on occasion.
My Mom used to speak bitterly about the Navy “joke” that they had signs in Norfolk that said “No Dogs or Sailors on The Grass”.
She didn’t appreciate the joke.
But yes...I agree. They should think twice.
I don’t have much desire to spend any time in Europe anymore. it’s just not the same, as I’ve been told. Besides, there’s a lot to see right here, and cheaper.
I can respect native Spanish residents wishing less crowding from tourism. (Still, it is the chief economic industry in the area, drying it up will cause considerable hardships for many Spanish people.)
The area has also been heavily infiltrated by Islamic invaders or “immigrants” that the traitorous Spanish government in Madrid has let into the country. Of all European nations, one might have thought that Spain would have known better. It having taken Spain 714 years (!!) to finally overcome the last big Islamic invasion from Africa. But, alas, it only takes a few Quislings in high positions to sell out an entire country and its future.
Just like we’ve been experiencing in USA and Canada and UK and Belgium and Italy and...
"the fabulously beautiful planet of Bethselamin ... booming tourist industry ...[led] to a colossal cumulative erosion problem ... [caused by] ten billion tourists per annum? Thus today the net balance between the amount you eat and the amount you excrete while on the planet is surgically removed from your body weight when you leave; so every time you go to the lavatory there, it is vitally important to get a receipt."

When we made port calls to Barcelona, we made a beeline to Los Caracoles...and that was back in 1978!
I got you! Try to get in Fort DeSoto campground! As a Floridian, you have to make reservations a year in advance in order to get a few days camping. I wrote a letter to Charlie Crist way back when he was Governor about Floridians money being just as good as the northerners and he did reply. He said basically to suck it up buttercup. Lol.
What the article didn’t mention is that this has to do with VRBOs or AirBnBs…many of the prettiest, formerly family-occupied neighborhoods in town no longer have permanent residents, but hundreds of visitors staying in apartments that have been transformed into vacation rentals.
This, of course, has driven up the price of apartments and has also emptied out whole neighborhoods of permanent residents.
US cities have had the same problem. Charleston, for example, was losing permanent residents because of the VRBO pressure. They solved it by requiring a minimum 30 day stay, except in those which were also occupied by the owner, who could rent his rooms for shorter stays provided that he lived there too.
I’m not sure what they’re going to do in Barcelona. This isn’t the way to go about it though…the city lives on tourism.
I think the Americas Cup races are in Barcelona this year.
I visited Barcelona as a tourist in December, 1965. The experience was quite pleasant. There were very few tourists there at the time, and the locals were friendly.
We stayed at the Ritz Hotel, located on Avenida de Jose Antonio Primo de Rivera, a wide thoroughfare named for a leader of the Spanish fascists who was executed by the Republicans during the Spanish Civil War. The hotel is still in business, but it’s a safe bet that the street has a different name today.
Yeah, I was there in 1973 (as a tourist). I remember talking with you a while back about the Bar Texas, another place I remember in Barcelona.
Oh, to be 18 again. Or not.
The Louis Vuitton Cup starts in August and the America’s Cup races start in October. Going to be kinda tough to keep foreigners out!
It is said of the Bourbons that they learn nothing and forget nothing.
See my post 54 and 57
Everybody hates tourists. We like they’re money, but tourists get in the way, and can’t drive, and clog up all the cool things in your city.
