‘We just can’t take this anymore’: Montana man, 68, begs for ‘moratorium on property taxes’ after his bill reaches $8K a year just ‘to live in our own house’

A senior from Montana has delivered a viral speech about the sorry state of property taxes in the Treasure State.

“I’m on Social Security, I’m 68-years-old and working just to pay my taxes,” says Kurt, in a clip shared on TikTok by Ryan Busse, who is running to be the next governor of Montana.

Kurt claims that over the last couple of years, his annual property taxes have soared from $895 to almost $8,000 — an increase of around 790% — which he says is like paying almost “$700 a month rent to the state to live in our own house.” The state has an Elderly Homeowner/Renter Tax Credit, and the maximum credit is $1,150.

“There needs to be a moratorium on what we have to pay,” he says, adding that he’s had to continue working into what should be his retirement golden years to cover his mounting property costs. “I’m stubborn enough [that] I don’t want to dig into my bank account to pay them.”

68 is a confused geezer? I’d love to see you reach that age sonny. Some people just get older but no wiser.

“Aren’t rich Marxists from Kalifornia and Washington moving there by the millions?”

I think Montana has long been a desired destination for 2nd homes if not for permanent change of residency. Those that do move there probably demand all sorts of government provided improvements and services.

I was born in 1955.

Geezer was a bad choice of words on my part. But without knowing the truth he may very well fit my description as I can’t believe facts in this one.

Not enough info.

In in central Florida — mine at $ 9700.

But I 100% own so I am able to decline the windstorm coverage and pay $ 1300 for the year. 30 miles inland.

The government creates inflation, housing demand and your taxes go up because of it.

My taxes were $2900 in 2019 and are about $3300 this cycle.

It does seem rather steep. Maybe the law in Montana has changed regarding the funding of escrow accounts requiring more of a cushion. Likely due to increases in hazard insurance. Does he live near a wildfire region?

It is also possible that part of the bill is for special assessments for such things as water and sewer connections or upgrades.

Gotta support the vast, bloated, woke government bureaucracy.

one of 10,000 effects of a printed, fiat, debt-based and centrally-controlled monetary system we live under

Property taxes are asinine! These assets do not create magical liquid capital unless/until it’s sold or rented out. We’re going to be seeing massive lein defaults in this country.

It's my understanding that one of the reasons people in the NE move to Florida when they retire is they can no longer afford the property taxes on their homes.

Keeping roads free of potholes, police and firefighters employed, etc. costs more and more money each year.

When I lived in Louisville, CO the house prices started to soar, but the Republican government decided they didn't need lots more money to run the town. They lowered the mill levy which is basically what the appraised home value is multiplied by to come up with the tax. This kept our taxes relatively constant.

I didn't know there were so many "Defund the Police" folks on FreeRepublic.

If your local city doesn't generate enough revenue to fund its various operations then you will have to depend on the state or the feds.

I thought conservatism was all about local control. You can't have local control without local funding.

“With no property taxes, who do you call when a fire breaks out in your kitchen?”

I’ve lived the vast majority of my life in two houses that were served by volunteer fire departments.

In the 1960s the VFD sent out cards in which a family would fill with 40 quarters.

Nowadays, I pay the NVFD via a $100 bank transfer.

If one doesn’t pay the dues, then the volunteer fire department will charge a response fee (about $800 circa 2010) whose amount I believe is set by FEMA.

Yes, and if the government doesn’t steal your home the HOA will. I pay almost as much to the HOA as I do on property taxes.

“ we are in the very last days of this system that has long been dependent on confidence in a fake fiat dollar,”

Literally the last few days…two days ago Saudi Arabia announced the end of a 50 year agreement to sell oil only in U.S. dollars (the “Petro-dollar”)…they will not continue that practice any longer, they will now sell oil in a number of different currencies, including the Chinese Yuan. The music has stopped, grab a chair fast.

I/we 100% own, too. It’s just that the first digit has gone up every year for the last three years. We’re gonna have to review our coverage to see what can be changed.

Of course. LOL

They force people into the corral and eliminate the gates.

Notice how it always starts as a suggestion on how to fix your problem. And it is always about you giving something up.

This is all part of the plan.

The resentment of the Boomers is real. Young people have been taught that we have ruined the planet, allowed nuclear weapons to exist, and institutionalized racism. Boomers are evil.

Now Boomers are living in large, paid off homes while Millennials and Gen X’ers can’t afford starter homes. Something must be done!

Since Government is a tool - some might say a weapon - to enforce equality, it is perfectly acceptable to raise the property tax on the Boomer’s homes and force them to move. Higher property taxes lower the value of the property making it more affordable! Yes, I have been told that with a straight face.

One of my sons often “jokes” about us selling him our house cheap so he can get out of the apartment they are in.

It is a concerted effort and it is going to get worse.
