“With no property taxes, who do you call when a fire breaks out in your kitchen?”

I’ve lived the vast majority of my life in two houses that were served by volunteer fire departments.

In the 1960s the VFD sent out cards in which a family would fill with 40 quarters.

Nowadays, I pay the NVFD via a $100 bank transfer.

If one doesn’t pay the dues, then the volunteer fire department will charge a response fee (about $800 circa 2010) whose amount I believe is set by FEMA.

That’s interesting. What happens when a person refuses to pay the response fee? Does the volunteer fire department seize and sell the house to get paid?
