Electric Rates: Through the Roof!
self | 06/03/2024 | FWDude

Posted on 06/03/2024 8:13:18 AM PDT by fwdude

My residential electric service contract is up in about a month and just checked the markets for renewal. The rates have SKYROCKETED.

I don't know if this is because of EV usage increase or just the general crappy economy under Biden, but it's about to price me out of home ownership.

Anyone else seeing this?

[Service company is Oncor.]

Yes, the rates are up where I am living too. I don’t think there are enough EV’s on the road for all these increases.

Texas has electric pricing legal defects.

The rate regulators allow absurd pricing at times.

Here in Florida, Tampa Electric is applying for massive increases in their monthly account rate. Up like 40%
That hits those with solar the hardest, women and children less.
If you make all your electric with your solar, you still have to pay this increase to be connected to the grid.

Join a co-op if you can. Those are usually the lowest rates. I’m on CoServ right now and they’re reasonable. Before that I was on Grayson/Collin Electric and was paying under 10 cents per kWh.

Utilities have to pass along their expenses and their expenses are rising. The PUC in your area has a detailed report available on the subject. They have to prepare those as part of the rate-setting process.

I really haven’t seen drastic increases in my electricity costs, primarily because I changed my HVAC out last year and got a higher SEER that reduced the usage. The overall ‘rate’ did go up but not appreciably (Southern Company recently brought another reactor on line at Plant Vogle so there’s some increase because of that).

Of all my utilities, electricity is the most stable in price and I am more in control over usage than the other (gas and water). I have yet to start my AC, for example. I expect to not be fully using it 24/7 until July and after.

Mine more than doubled, both electric and gas.

All these server farms by Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and the feds, along with EVs , I the feds shutting down Most types of power plants are a recipe for our total destruction.

We have thousands and thousands of acres of solar farms in our state making free electricity from the sun.

Here we see electric rates going down, down, down . . . as it should because solar electricity is free electricity.

Sometime later this year we expect the power company to start paying consumers to use the surplus electricity; either that or they will have to pour it out on the ground.

It is not because of EV’s but it is because of the rats who push EV’s.

Yes. In California, I understand we pay double what people in any other state pay - this is b/c of the governor’s idiotic “green” initiatives, power plants being decommissioned, climate change initiatives, carbon neutral programs etc. As if all air pollution comes from California - and not from China or India, WE get air pollution from China but I guess that is OK.

My bill has gone up regularly and consistently for the past several years with no end in sight. A new gas tax is set to take effect on July 1st, gas is already $5.00/gallon in this state, some places, over $6.00/gallon

Our aging grid is also way overextended and needs upgrading and replacing - why I get notices during heat waves not to run large appliances or plug in EVs. b/c the system is “at capacity” - “heat waves” here mean temps of 100+ often for days on end - we are told, of course, to turn down our a/c to 78 degrees - too high a temp for my elderly relatives.

Then there is also the “new” pricing for untilities based on one’s income, which the California gov is trying to implement. Anyone with an income will be taxed all to h***.

Why I always say: Love my state. Hate its government.
