The world's first human trial of a drug that can regenerate teeth will begin in a few months, less than a year on from news of its success in animals. This paves the way for the medicine to be commercially available as early as 2030.
The trial, which will take place at Kyoto University Hospital from September to August 2025, will treat 30 males aged 30-64 who are missing at least one molar. The intravenous treatment will be tested for its efficacy on human dentition, after it successfully grew new teeth in ferret and mouse models with no significant side effects.
"We want to do something to help those who are suffering from tooth loss or absence," said lead researcher Katsu Takahashi, head of dentistry and oral surgery at Kitano Hospital. "While there has been no treatment to date providing a permanent cure, we feel that people's expectations for tooth growth are high."

That's cool if it works as it should. Dentures could be a thing of the past and something like this could be part of your oral treatment.

In the future if you get a cavity, just have the tooth pulled and grow another one.

This (if it works and doesn’t have horrible side effects) is great!

Sorry, but I don’t trust any such drug to regrow teeth. I mean, what happens if the tooth grows anywhere else but where it’s supposed to? What a nightmare scenario!

I’ve read on what has happened, like teeth too big or teeth that just wouldn’t stop growing. But it’s great if they’ve gotten control of the process well enough that it’s ready for marketing.

Patients grow teeth just fine. Why the complaints?
Maybe they also tend to grow a tail or two, but what the hey?

The Tooth Fairy Union will file an injunction against the use of this procedure. If these trials are successful, the TFU would go bankrupt.

How does the drug know what kind of tooth to grow? What if you got molars instead of incisors? You would almost look like AOC!

That's cool if it works as it should. Dentures could be a thing of the past and something like this could be part of your oral treatment.
It could also mean no more need for toothbrushes or toothpaste or dental cleanings. Just let your mouth go to heck, and go in for new teeth.
The dental industry could get by with a lot fewer dentists, and Colgate and Crest would go out of business. So, before any of that happens, the dental industry will make sure that the new-teeth industry dies before it gets started. Sorry to be a killjoy. ;)
Imagine what would happen to the medical industry if a cure was found for cancer, or all cancers. Millions of people would be out of jobs and many clinics and hospitals would cease to exist or get downsized. Same kind of demise as the dental industry with the new teeth growing treatments.

Old Dan Tucker was a fine old man.
Washed his face in a frying pan.
Combed his hair with a wagon wheel.
Died with a toothache in his heel.
