REVEALED: The Cracker Barrel store closures so far in 2024
Daily Mail UK ^ | May 24, 2024 | Daniel Jones

Cracker Barrel has shut four stores so far this year - as the beloved family chain battles for survival.

Stock for the Southern country-themed chain has plummeted in the past week after the company's CEO said the restaurant is no longer 'relevant'.

Julie Masino was talking to investors as she outlined plans to turn things around at the chain, which until the closures had 662 outlets across 45 states.

Popularity has waned over the past decade - with its loyal clientele of elderly people failing to return after the pandemic.

To cut costs, it has already shuttered four stores this year: two in California, one in Oregon and anther in Colombia, South Carolina. See below for full details.

Cracker Barrel says it will open two more lcoations this year. It is not clear if it will shut any more.

Last year it shut three other stores in Oregon.

The fall in cutomers has hit the share price in recent years.

But the price tanked even more after its chief executive Julie Felss Masino told investors: 'We're just not as relevant as we once were.'

I too find that annoying. At least they don’t call it The Colombia.

I used to stop at one (Richmond IN) as a halfway point in an 18 hour road trip. They had a great haddock dinner for a great price but many other things were too over salted (esp. chicken pot pie).

I’m a southern boy also. I’ve eaten at CB twice. Junk. It’s not southern cooking. The biscuits were good tho.

I grew up in a place called Maryland. I know northerners don’t claim us, and southerners don’t claim us, so I am not sure what constitutes ‘southern’ food. I’ll just retreat back to blue crabs and old bay for now.

On top of leaning more leftish over the years, I’d say the bigger issue is Cracker Barrel has spread itself far too thin in recent years. When I was a wee lad, the closest Cracker Barrel was about an hour away or so, and it was one of those places you only went when you traveled and went on vacations. The good was much better in those days, and the store has a lot of interesting things on offer.

Now you can’t swing a dead cat without hitting a Cracker Barrel, so the days of it being a somewhat special place to go are long gone. The rocking chairs are plastic that looks like wood, the food sucks (could plausibly be plastic, too, depending on location), and the store is filled with cheap, mass-produced trinkets from China.

So it didn't do well in California and Oregon. There's problem with crime in Columbia, SC.

Breakfast is good at Cracker Barrel. It's a winning formula at Waffle House.

So they need to return to their roots.

I don’t have one near me but don’t particularly care. I would love to have a Roy Rogers (closest 1100 miles) and a White Castle (closest 200 miles) near by.

The 3 closures in Oregon last year were all in the Portland area and were due to the soft on crime gubmint doing nothing to protect them, so they had to hire private security for themselves. And now the LAST one in the state (5+ hours away), has closed. (smh)

Long ago I quit eating the JUNK FOOD at Cracker Barrel and moved up to McDonald’s, as McDonald’s is at least willing to tell me the ingredients and nutrient numbers in their food - good luck getting that from any joint that serves ‘home-cooked’ style food, which is pure crap.

18-hour road trip. One driver. That is brutal. I used to do a 700-mile trip. That is as long as I could go.

We used to go for breakfast, but it’s too expensive and there are other places.

I knew they were in trouble when they stopped selling ribeye steaks ... pre-pandemic.

"They have the best tasting cheese."

There is ZERO connection between the restaurant chain and the cheese company.

Notice that no one else is TYPING IN ALL CAPS? That’s because it’s considered BAD NETIQUETTE, and they’re not ill-mannered.

one of the worst breakfast experiences i ever had in my life was at a cracker barrel where they REFUSED to leave off smothering my breakfast with god-awful gloppy gravy ... no substitutions or special requests, you see, explained the restaurant manager ...

i wrote a letter to corporate complaining about the outrageous service: they sent me a voucher for ONE free meal with no apology ... not a free meal for two, but a SINGLE free meal! ... never been back, hope they close down ALL of their crappy stores ...

My wife and I rarely go now. If we do, it’s breakfast only. They’ve screwed everything else up.
